The Demo is legit (with major gaming sites already reporting [http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/24/xcom-enemy-unknown-demo-out-today-on-steam/]), but the download button's not working as of yet it seems. The demo will contain two missions from the tutorial, plus the base. Rather small demo for a large game like this, but we get what we can.

This doesn't seem to be working for me, Steam just tells me I have 'no subscription' whenever I try to download it.

Demo's pretty lame. It's pretty much a railroad ride. Look at this - now stop looking at it, we're going over here. Now look at this! Stop looking at that, mission time. Move that guy there. That guy there. That guy there. Use that ability.

Had the same issue, just restarted Steam and it fixed the problem.
Still downloading, 60%, will update when I've played it.

Update: Can only echo the comments of others, quite a bit of the demo is spent being told what to do. Aside from that it was quite enjoyable, looks to be a solid game that I'll likely pick up at some point.

Well... That was pretty much because it was just the tutorial (which yes, you can skip the tutorial in the actual game). It is obviously going to be simple and easy so people can learn the ropes. It is actually fairly typical for most demos to just be a copy-pasted tutorial.

OT: I really liked the demo. Yeah, it was just the tutorial, but what gameplay there was was really fun. I could see myself spending a lot of time with the game. Really looking forward to it, considering purchasing it. :D

I'll quote myself from Mr. Chalk's announcement post:

Honestly, the game is locked to baby-mode. It's practically impossible to fail.

I would have loved to play some of the demo missions that we've seen in the gameplay vids, that would have been awesome, but what we're handed here is... well, suffice it to say that it leaves a whole lot to be desired.

I've already bought the game, and I'm sure I'll be more than happy with it once it releases, but frankly I find this demo to be excessively underwhelming, especially seeing as how we know that better demos have been playable for a long time, provided you had press credentials.

I see no reason why they'd limit a public demo so much, both in terms of map size, feature-pallet and enemy variety.

Most of all, I guess I'm just severely disappointed. I admit I expected at least double the content, especially considering the (relatively) enormous download size.

I'm very surprised. I was enjoying my time in a strategy game. Shock horror.
I just hope that the actual game is a little more open, and a little harder. Or a lot harder.

Yeah, I really just wanted to fuck around with base stuff. 'Twas not to be.

Anyone know if the tutorial is skippable in the game proper?

According to a Game Informer article I read in the most recent issue... Yes. Completely. :D

No but the hints can be turned off but if I'm right I don't think that those levels were actually the tutorial levels and were instead just levels created specifically for the demo. According to another video that I watched the tut level takes place in front of a coffee shop/restaurant thats been attacked by a bunch of aliens and you can choose to do it without the hints but still have to do the mission anyway. Also you can fail really easily in it apparently.

Edit: Found the video and need to do a quick correction. Yes the tutorial can be switched off however you get thrown straight into a difficult mission at the start anyway.

Anyone know if the consoles will have a demo?

I'm getting this for my Xbox since I want to play the multiplayer with my friends despite having a PC that I'm sure can handle it.

It's called a demo, short for demonstration, which is to give you a taste of things to come and the idea behind the game. It it gave you the freedom to do everything, then why buy the main game? I'm downloading it just to make sure my computer can handle it, I think it can, but just in case.

At the moment the demo seems to be PC only. I don't think there was any big news release about the demo anyway and the fact there was one did surprise many a person. So don't know is my answer at the moment. Also Xcom: EU has a multiplayer mode?

Yeah, it has not bearing on story, you can make your team up of aliens and the marines/soldiers. Using a points system before hand, say you upgrade or make two guys really tough but it uses all your points, you only have a two man team as opposed to possibly 6 cheaper units. They haven't gone into great detail, but I'm glad it's there :) even as a fun team death match type thing, it's an extra doesn't seem the like it will take away from the core experience.

Damn, man. I don't know how big the gap between "tutorial mission" and "whole game" is, but you just jumped it. And somewhere in that chasm you leaped, is some of the stuff I wanted to play around with.

it was meant to say "If it gave you the freedom", that was a typo I didn't spot. I am not saying demos should have bugger all in them, but you can't expect everything to be in it, which is kind of how your post came across is all.

EDIT: Did you play the whole demo? Because the second mission I played let me do things as I wanted at the pace I wanted.
