Take 2 has just announced that 2K Marin, the creators of Bioshock 2, will be breating the newest installment in the XCOM series. Some interesting point:

-It will be in a first person perspective.
-They plan on only releasing it for the Xbox 360
-You will play the role of a FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat.
-An interesting quote:"2K Marin is currently developing XCOM(R), a suspenseful first-person shooter where players must do battle against an unknown and faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world."

What the hell is this?!! They're just going to turn it into some terrible FEAR clone! For the Xbox no less?! They're repeating the mistake of XCOM Enforcer, arguably the weakest part of the XCOM series, and definitely the game least like the XCOM experience. XCOM is one of the best and difficult turn based strategy games for the PC. While those who still played it have been aching for a modern rerelease, they will probably find themselves as outraged as I am that this is what we're getting instead. Anyone play, and enjoy, the original series? If so, how do you feel about this?

By the way, thanks for posting it magicman4443, good catch.

This is one of those games that sounds really good on paper but will most likely be fucked up in execution. And it basically sounds like they sold out the original games as well.

I wont hold my breath for it, but i can hope

Thanks for the news OP.

I was really really really excited for about 3.7 seconds and stopped caring the moment I got to this line. Everything after that line could be "Loading the game gives you the best orgasm of your life and 2K sends you a thousand dollars" and I honestly couldn't give a shit.

Way to ruin X-Com 2K.

X-Com FPS my ass... That's not X-Com, that's "Yet another generic shooter."

/e goes to play TFTD for the 1000th time.

Well for those of us, like me, who are fairly ignorant of XCOM and all that, this will probably be a really fun game. I look forward to seeing what the "geniuses" behind BioShock will do in their next game.

Time for some lobster killin'?

Anyways a good analogy for how I feel right now is,
"It is like they announced that there is a new Duke Nukem game, it's going to be a bejeweled clone".

At least it's distracted? I haven't played XCOM in a few months, got hooked on Dwarf Fortress. The dwarves, I hear them mining in my sleep...

Why is it being called an X-COM game when you're supposed to be playing as an FBI agent?
X-COM is it's own orginization.

Good lord no!
We do not need Enforcer 2.

I still have the annoying nasally voice of that scientist stuck in my head.

I just wont bother, because I know I'll be disappointed.

So many things wrong with this, as pointed out by my fellow Escapists, but man... I can't help but feel depressed that one of my all-time favorite turn-based strategy games is being converted into another generic 'let's shoot aliens' FPS.

At least when Fallout was brought to consoles, they kept the heart of the combat (V.A.T.S.), the great inventory/trade system and most of the original gameplay elements like the SPECIAL system and stuff, intact, only really changing the camera angle.

This... I don't know how they can do it right. Oh, wait, yes I do, by not doing it.

... what?

A FPS.. that change the tone completely. Especially when the orignal games were all about stategy and management on a planetary/battlefield scale (more or less)?

And only for the Xbox?

Even it it isnt even made yet, i am not feeling any optimism for this game.. but we can "hope" it wont be just another 60$ complete failure.

I'm going to be joining the chorus of "WFT First Person?" chanting. There are two reasons why this is as such - firstly, FPS are the "popular" genre at the moment; secondly, 2K likely doesn't want to leave their comfort zone (much like Valve).

Also, I'm not saying a tactical game with shooter elements can't be done, I'm just saying 2K can't do it. I'm fairly certain we'll be getting a reskinned Bioshock with MAYBE (just maybe) some squad elements, though I find even that much unlikely...

Brand recognition. Doing the game under some new name wouldn't get the attention of the thousands of fans of the original X-COM. By making it kinda related to the game and slapping on the name of a true classic on it, they hope to rope in some extra sales.

Can't they come up with an original franchise to make a 3D shooter out of? It's not like X-COM has anything to offer an FPS that you couldn't use in any other setting. Hell, most of the iconic aliens in X-COM aren't even very original. The thing that made X-COM worth playing is the gameplay, which simply can't translate to a first-person shooter.

But nooo, they heard there are still some fans of these old games, and decided that they might get a few extra sales by slapping the name X-COM onto their shitty shooter. Fuck you, 2K. Fuck you.

It might rope in some extra sales but turn anything else they slap the X-COM name on into a pariah. They'll alienate the fans they're trying to draw in with the X-COM name.

I'm guessing it'll probably play a lot like Fallout 3? With the simulated action point combat and all.

Overall, I don't like the idea of X-com from an FPS perspective. It was a game built around tactical squad combat and constraining you to just the first-person perspective of a single character means they're probably ditching the squad aspect, and while theoretically possible, nobody's done a tactical single-player FPS game. (Since many players are good enough at FPS games that they'll headshot their way through problems instead of having to be clever about it).

My view on the idea of a new XCOM game is this: The best way to look at this game is as a new IP. The XCOM in the title doesn't mean anything. All it means is that the game will somehow have aliens in it. People may not consider it a part of the series, and that's fine. 2K will just use the XCOM to give people a basis for what's going to happen: alien invasion. Just my opinion about it.
