I do it like a flight stick. Forward for down back for up, I'm not sure if that's considered normal or inverted.
That's how my brain works, too. I do inverted because it feels logical for me to compare any first-person shooter experience with the first person flight simulator experience. Hell, even third-person flight games, like Star Fox, has inverted to act like a joystick.

To me, normal settings feels unnatural.

That is the very definition of inverted.

The only conceivable reason to use flight-sim style controls is if you are actually playing a flight-sim. Otherwise, pointing down to look up is silly - you wouldn't invert your mouse y-axis outside of a game, would you?

It's slightly more reasonable to invert if you're using a thumbstick, but you're still weird. Inverting when using a mouse is just insane.

I don't understand why games and gamers have decided that the invert is even remotely worthwhile.

I hate it. Absolutely hate it. I can' do it.
It pissed me off last time I was at a friends' and we were playing halo 3(I already hate its multiplayer to begin with, 2 is MUCH better!) and he had inverted on his controls. WHY?

I can understand with flight sims but anything else is just being a tool.
Yeah, I mean those people who write with their left hands as well, what's that about? It's awkward for me, therfore they're weird!
... that would work if you could make the argument that handedness is 100% by choice.
People pick up a contoller, they don't think about what's the better option, they play how it's naturally easier for them. Same goes for guitars, skateboards, kicking a football etc etc. Saying someone is a tool for a preference that's not yours is completely fucking bananas.

I feel your pain OP! Im the only 1 out of our mates who uses inverted controls for console shooting, and whenever we're taking turns on CoD or anything else they're always bitching. 'ohh invert, what a bellend!' xD I can usually kick all but 1 of their asses on MW2 anyway, so Im happy in that knowledge :D

Daystar kinda described it in a logical way, but tbh, its just how I started playing shooters, and I guess you kinda get used to it. I can't even play with the normal controls now, I mean what kind of sick logic is that- up is up? you guys are all weird! :p

Normal, except for flight sims, which should be played with a joystick anyway.

Inverted.

First games I played using a joystick were flight sims and the like. I hold controllers more or less horizontal, and back then they were fixed to be horizontal, so in my mind forward and back are 'pitch forward' and 'pitch back.' It stuck, and now, regardless of game or game type, it's become counter-intuitive to use the normal setting.

I agree with the first poster in that I don't see what the big deal is. It takes about 8 seconds to set up a controller and then everyone can play the game their way. There doesn't need to be a discussion about it past simple curiosity. And really, with all the other ways to prove superiority in games that someone resorting to mocking a personal choice in controller setup rather reeks of a sore loser, or a sore winner.

Myself, I appreciate when a game has complete controller customisation. Set it up however you want and the game's like slipping on a comfortable, old shoe.

Normal. I think I had it inverted previously but now normal feels more...yeah.

I immediately leapt into the controls menu when Area 51 tried to make me use inverted.

My preference changed between consoles. N64 and Playstation One, inverted, since it was usually the default(or only) option. After X-Box came out, went to normal Y-axis and just got used to it.

If I can play with both the X and Y axis inverted, I do. If one is inverted, but the other isn't, I get ridiculously confused. I'm not exactly sure where I got used to X and Y inversion, but it just feels more natural to me. However if I have to, I can play non-inverted.
