If I had a shield for Renaissance Faire, it'd be a round shield with a painting of Jormungand on it. For those that don't know, Jormungand is a giant snake surrounding the earth at the bottom of the ocean continually swallowing its own tail in Norse mythology.
A snake eating it's own tail is already a pretty popular image. Death being the beginning and all that. My favourite relating to that would be the image of Thor fishing up said beasty from the depths in order to beat a giant in a bet. The cool part is that Thor floors the giant with one punch when the giant wusses out and cuts the line.

Or to be tasteless or to see if the teachers get it use

So, I am making a shield for school, and it has to have some sort of image on it that has some sort of significance. However, I also want to use this for a Renaissance Faire, so I don't want to half-ass it. The shield is your standard design, and it's painted blue on one half, green on the other. What should my symbol be?

And my family doesn't have a family crest, so just avoid that option.
Well what are the traits of your family, or what have they accomplished in the past?
There seems to be a bad habit involving dying randomly in gutters it my family. Maybe a symbol of an Irish guy laying in the street with a bottle and crossed out eyes would be appropriate.
It probably would, but I assume that your background is Gaelic from your last name Campbell, meaning "crooked mouth", so maybe a picture of Han Solo grinning?

An alternate name also means "son of the battle chieftain", so a Gaelic warrior would be a cool symbol.
Wow, two Han Solo references in one thread. And what, exactly, does a Gaelic warrior look like?

Think William Wallace like, with a kilt and large swords, axes, and a round shield.

My family crest is red with three white clovers on it, if you're also of Irish descent you could use that. Or use what my somewhat distant relatives have on their crest (O'Carmody instead of my surname, Carmody) an Ostrich eating a snake. No really. Look.

Where the hell did feudal Irishmen see an Ostrich? And who thought they would look cool on a shield? [http://www.thetreemaker.com/coats/O%27Carmody-Ireland2t.jpg]

What this guy said Go with the chicken!
On the other hand, while it is a tad cliche, I am always a fan of the pendragon.

I really like the dragon head motif Bowen had on his shield near the end of Dragonheart as well.
