I've been applying to the Police Academy here in my homecountry (Finland)
Today I got the news that I passed all the tests and got into the School I've been wanting to go to for more than 10 years. It's been a dream since I've been a kid to study to become a Police Officer and in just 2 months that'll start.
That's awesome! I've always wanted to be a detective, but the cheap ass Irish government have a hiring freeze on public sector workers (including the Gardaí, our police force).

However, just yesterday I was accepted into the civilian version of a Master's programme designed for law enforcement. So even if I won't have the authority of a police detective, I'll have the skills!
You'll be halfway there with that, then when they open the freeze I bet you'll have it easier to join than for "first timers".
Is this Detective thing you're talking about a certain part of the police or is it the naming of the "whole" police fundation there?

Have any of you fellow Escapees' ever achieved anything you've dreamed about for months or years?
What was it and how did you feel when you got the news?
In a similar situation my childhood dream was to become a video game designer. Video games were the only thing I was really passionate about as a kid. Now I am working on a game that I plan to have published on steam and other outlets with a demo that should be out by the end of the summer. So I am on my way there just like you.

Also just thought I should toss it out there congratulations dude you are living the dream literally!
That's absolutely awesome.
Keep pushing hard and learning new stuff and let's hope you have that little bit of luck on your side and get into something really big!

But seriously, congratulations! I'll give you an advice that could save your life one day - don't talk about your retirement, from what I've seen in movies, those who do, rarely survive.

I have no real accomplishments to speak of. I beat a lot of games and seen a lot of movies. Think I'll go cry in the corner now.

The Gardaí [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garda_S%C3%ADoch%C3%A1na] is just another word for the national police of Ireland (the Republic of Ireland, that is).
Funnily enough, the master's course I'm doing is on computer crime and digital investigation, and (although the course is taught in Ireland), there isn't even a cybercrime division of the Gardaí! So I'll probably end up doing consulting work abroad, if I stick with cyberforensics.

Is there a specific role within the Finnish police you're hoping for?

Can I bribe you with steam games? And congrats!

OT: ERRMM, I Got an award for excellence at my second college, and since I spent all of my academic life before that turning in work late and generally under achieving it felt really good to finally have the motivation to do my best and try hard for once.

Congratulations though!

I felt like that when I got accepted for my Masters. It was validation that I'm actually halfway decent at academia.

Not yet really.
There's not much info you can get about the specifics of different departments when you don't study. But I heard I'll get load sof info on different sorts of crime fighting when the studies begin so hopefully when I get there I'll learn more in detail about what I'll be able to work with.
If I'd have to say now I'd go with drug police, even if that deals with some of the most "hardcore" criminals in the country I think I could see myself with a well trained dog cathcing drug dealers.
The other option would be "Karhukopla" which is the closest thing the Finns come to a S.W.A.T. team which would also be interesting. But I've never heard anything about them... Nothing about training, equipment, missions they've done, nothing can be found. It's like they don't excist...

hehe, thanks.
What you said plus 3 hours of paperwork in an 8 hour workday ;P

Everytime I carry someone out from the bar I'll say "Ootko se sinä, Tomzu?"
See you around :)
