As long as there are people, some of them are just looking for reasons to sneer down at others from an invented position of moral superiority. Just so happens smokers are probably the last group of people left that it's generally seen as okay to insult.

Honestly, the majority of the stigma about smokers comes from crap I see every day. If I had a nickel for every time I walked into college and saw a large group of people standing right outside the main entrance, right next to the sign that says "NO SMOKING WITHIN 25 FEET" and a provided area with benches 25 feet further away and off to the side of the main path...let's just say my tuition would be paid off by now. When I have to walk through a small cloud of foul smelling ash to get into the building it really bugs me and I am usually one of those "live and let live" kind of guys. You can smoke if you want to, I honestly don't see it as more of a threat to life then drinking alcohol if you take into account accidental deaths due to drinking and driving specifically. I am PRETTY sure (though don't quote me because I cant be 100% sure) that more people die from alcohol poisoning and drunk driving then die from smoking but I am positive more uninvolved people die from OTHER people drinking then the same situation with smoking and to say otherwise is absurd.

At the end of the day, smoking has a stronger stigma not because it's more of a threat to life or more dangerous, it has that stigma because it's more ANNOYING then drinking and that's not really something that can be prevented since no matter how hard you try there will always be that group of morons who don't want to walk an extra 25 feet to benefit other people. Though if you really think about it, if all the people who smoked obeyed those rules it wouldn't be as annoying and you have to wonder (at least I do) would it be completely banned in public as much as it is if it wasn't so up front on the annoyance meter because people are being stupid with it? If i stood in front of a building, spraying a gas that smelled like tar and poking myself with a pin I am pretty sure I would be stopped.

It's that combonation of accepted and annoying that puts smokers in the situation they find themselves in, nobody looks at someone smoking and thinks they are doing something crazy, they accept it. Not to mention we tend to lump the worst of the crowd with the whole group, so those idiots standing by the entrance to my college are basically the representitives of everyone who smokes, so yeah, if you want people to leave you alone while smoking and not bug you, obey the rules of your vice like everyone else does. As long as you do that I, at least, have no problem with you smoking or drinking or cutting off your own fingers. If it doesn't affect me your personal choices are your personal choices, just know that when you do something you are part of a group and often times the worst of that group are the ones everyone sees so pick your groups wisely yeah?

It's not even addicting; I can stop smoking at a whim for long periods of time but when I do smoke, its like something refreshing happens to me.
If you're not addicted(four a day...) then I think you should quit. Don't bullshit yourself into thinking it's not, because when it does get a hold of you you'll wish you didn't start to begin with. I've been smoking/snuffing for nine years and while I don't have any desire to quit, I would never have given in to peer pressure if I had the chance to turn back time.
I don't care what you, or others, do to their own bodies, but stupid comments like that annoy me.
Then continue to be annoyed to my truth friend. :p

People that smoke in any area where other non-smoking people are and therebuy polluting their lungs, they are true devils.

Smoking should be banned.

Smoking is unattractive. It's like conforming to a fad which sickens a vocal majority.

If the opinions of others bothers you so much, then it seems to me that you started smoking out of peer pressure/social influence. Now that your current environment rejects smokers, this seems like a good time to quit.

I detest smoking to the highest degree. What it does to peoples health, the smell, people thinking its cool, the obnoxious fumes. I cant stand it at all not even the linger of it. If you lit up next to me and I had no way to move and asked you to not and you still did.....let me just say, we would have a problem. One I would fix fast most definitely.
But why would he have to not smoke next to you? You know YOU could move, you know if he not in q non-smoking zone he has every right to smoke , i find non-smokers kinda selfish . Then again if you were at a certain spot first then probably you could ask if he could not , VERY politely . I once was waiting for the bus , outside , in the winter , in canada ( it was freezing but i didn't want to bother anyone ) and this lady came and stood next to me , and asked me if i could move because she didn't like cigarette smoke . I returned and told her to not to stand next to me because i was here first , she got mad , i lol'd . Selfish woman .

I don't like smokers because I have bad asthma and inhaling smoke, even in small amounts, can cause an asthma attack, so just walking by someone smoking can cause me to go into a coughing fit.

It really does depend on what you smoke. In my short experience with smoking (Hey, can't hate it unless you've tried it right?) the cheap ones taste like complete ass and the one's he's smoking (marlboro is actually more expensive if I recall) are better made so of course the taste will change :p

OP: I don't understand the mentality either. Excuse me sir, yes you, the one who's giving me a dirty look for smoking and/or drinking. You think I have the problem? I'm not the one who's self esteem is so far down in the gutter I have to get on a high horse to feel better.

And that is my response to anyone who thinks i'm scum because when I go out for a drink every couple of weeks i'll also have a smoke.

The only one being selfish is you. You were the one defiling the air with your stench, not her. That's exactly why people hate smokers, they stink and as the poster above me pointed out, some people cannot deal with the smoke, me included.

If you want to smoke, do so in private, not on the walkways or at a busstop.

It's just like drinking. If you want to get drunk, do so in private.

I think you're the selfish one at least in your example, you should considerer the harm your smoking does to others more. Obviously if you are very far from anyone and someone comes next to you just to mock your smoking then yes they are being moron.

But in your example you were smoking in a public bus stop. In a place that people actually have to come if they are moving by bus.

So smokers aren't even allowed to smoke outside anymore? Hell, most bus stops don't even have seats anymore, smokers are just standing there. She could have quite easily stood about five steps away and not had to smell the smoke. That's usually the case down here.

Cigs have this eloquent taste, and because of this I smoke if I'm doing nothing just to remove my boredom (Nothing like a good ole Marlboro to liven up my day).
What does eloquent taste like? Is it a bit like pretentiousness? My cigarettes just taste like chemicals and defeat.
Quoted for awesomeness. Funniest thing I've read on here in a long time.

OT: Yeah, I would probably judge you poorly because you are a smoker. And I'm sorry about that. Yes, I know it is a stereoptype and not all smokers are inconsiderate arseholes, but unfortunately for you the club you have joined is a very visibly and identifiable club, and it does have a lot of dicks in it who feel that my wish to not breathe in their exhaled smoke is entirely unreasonable. And what is with the cigarette butts everywhere? Every smoker claims it is not them but there are millions and millions of cigarette butts inconsiderately strewn across city streets, parks and glaciers (true story: I followed a smoker going for a walk in a national park in New Zealand in one of the most beautiful places in the world where she tossed her cigarette butt into a fucking glacier). So many rants to be had about smokers blowing smoke in my face, of being burnt by lit cigarettes in crowded spaces, or crammed in next to one of those particularly smelly individuals on a train, etc etc. I know these people are not you, but after so many bad experiences with smokers, it is hard not to stereotype, and I am sorry about that because that is not reasonable behaviour.

I've grown up around a brother and a sister who have smoked for as long aa I can remember so smoking in most cases doesn't bother me, my ex smoked and yes kissing her did sadly taste slightly worse when she was smoking but its not like it stopped me.

Smoking does have a negative effect on your health and finances but they are your health and [/B] your finances, as long as you don't negatively impact the heath of others I have no objection.

The only exception to this outlook is I tell my fiancee not to smoke, yes I know its her right to smoke if she so chose but I don't want her to end up with some serious smoking illness so I can live with a bit of dickishness on my part.

Please tell me , whos air is it ? Non smokers Act like the air belongs to you .let's take it a step further shall we , if a person that just plain stinks stands next to you let's tell them to stand somewhere else . And god forbid someone passwind ( read: fart ) anywhere in public. This is the main problem i have , you have the right to not smoke and dislike the smell , but you have no right to tell a person what to do and where to do it in a public place , where no laws are being broken. Instead moving , or in my example i had put in my previous post no standing next to me , you prefer to confront the smoker .

A glacier. I lol'ed at this.. xD

Hmmm anyway aren't cigs illegal in national parks due to wildfire risks or something? Just a thought, I'm in no way experienced with NZ law.

No and no one really gives a shit I mean why would you bring this question to a Gaming forum of all places. I don't what you choose to stick in your mouth and suck on. Just don't smoke around people in confined places or smoke in someones face and any normal person won't care but we can't do anything about the others and this thread will do nothing to help your situation.

Also as long as you just don't fuck the ends on the ground and put them in a bin I don't care.
