Honestly, the majority of the stigma about smokers comes from crap I see every day. If I had a nickel for every time I walked into college and saw a large group of people standing right outside the main entrance, right next to the sign that says "NO SMOKING WITHIN 25 FEET" and a provided area with benches 25 feet further away and off to the side of the main path...let's just say my tuition would be paid off by now. When I have to walk through a small cloud of foul smelling ash to get into the building it really bugs me and I am usually one of those "live and let live" kind of guys. You can smoke if you want to, I honestly don't see it as more of a threat to life then drinking alcohol if you take into account accidental deaths due to drinking and driving specifically. I am PRETTY sure (though don't quote me because I cant be 100% sure) that more people die from alcohol poisoning and drunk driving then die from smoking but I am positive more uninvolved people die from OTHER people drinking then the same situation with smoking and to say otherwise is absurd.
At the end of the day, smoking has a stronger stigma not because it's more of a threat to life or more dangerous, it has that stigma because it's more ANNOYING then drinking and that's not really something that can be prevented since no matter how hard you try there will always be that group of morons who don't want to walk an extra 25 feet to benefit other people. Though if you really think about it, if all the people who smoked obeyed those rules it wouldn't be as annoying and you have to wonder (at least I do) would it be completely banned in public as much as it is if it wasn't so up front on the annoyance meter because people are being stupid with it? If i stood in front of a building, spraying a gas that smelled like tar and poking myself with a pin I am pretty sure I would be stopped.
It's that combonation of accepted and annoying that puts smokers in the situation they find themselves in, nobody looks at someone smoking and thinks they are doing something crazy, they accept it. Not to mention we tend to lump the worst of the crowd with the whole group, so those idiots standing by the entrance to my college are basically the representitives of everyone who smokes, so yeah, if you want people to leave you alone while smoking and not bug you, obey the rules of your vice like everyone else does. As long as you do that I, at least, have no problem with you smoking or drinking or cutting off your own fingers. If it doesn't affect me your personal choices are your personal choices, just know that when you do something you are part of a group and often times the worst of that group are the ones everyone sees so pick your groups wisely yeah?
