You should be think of your self as lucky. If I were in the scenario the father would probably tell me to keep it off so I can postpone any of that crap he's afraid of(in other words nature).
Because you're so fat?

Of course you can keep your shirt off. You could have a sweaty, shirtless make out session with your brother on your front lawn if you wanted to.

I probably would've chided him for trying to shelter his daughters so much. Maybe make a remark about how if he wants to shelter them he should get them back in the house.

cutting the grass, painting the deck and shed, and replacing wood in said deck. It was very hot outside and I was absolutely drenched in sweat. Also I didn't want to get paint on my clothes so I took off my shirt. Plus with it being summer I decided to work on my tan.

My neighbors next door were having a cook out with family. I'm assuming it was for the Independence Day, better late than never, and his daughters were outside. The they kids which I'm going to guess are between 6 and 13.

Well I guess my neighbor didn't take kindly to me and my brother not having shirts on and came over to give us a piece of his mind. He said, "Guys put some shirts on I don't want my daughters seeing that." And he just walked away.

Now I've never spoken a word in my life to this guy and it really caught me off guard. My brother and I are just normally built so it's not like we're trying to show off our bodies. and we weren't bothering them.

Was this justified?

EDIT: Some have asked, and yes it was my yard.
Your yard. Your rules (well your parents, but more yours than your neighbors). I personally would have told him to piss off, what's he gonna do, break and enter onto your property and threaten you further? That's a court case right there. So however you chose to take it, you are completely in the right. Besides, at 6 all you're thinking about is sausages and custard. At 13, all you're thinking about is what Selena Gomez/Miley Cyrus is wearing, not shagging you (no offence).

So yeah, dude was totally in the wrong.

Your private property, he doesn't have the right to say shit unless you started an orgy in full view of everyone.

It's not really a big deal. He might have just thought you guys did it because you knew the girls were out there. Girls mature fairly early. Plenty of girls have pretty much completed puberty by the time they turn 13-14. Any normal protective father dreads that age and does everything possible to keep his daughter innocent and the little girl he has always known her to be.

I'm not accusing you of anything, but I've found that 9 times out of 10, a shirtless guy is only shirtless because he wants to show off/seem cool. Frat boys, meatheads, wannabe rockstars, and just general douchebags seem to be the vast majority of shirtless man-whores in the world.

I avoid taking my shirt off in public, if only to avoid being associated with the above. Unless you're swimming, at the beach, or in the privacy of your own home there is no reason or need to be shirtless. Depending on your skin tone, wearing a light white shirt may actually keep you cooler than wearing no shirt at all.

Summed up? Not a huge deal, but removing your shirt when you know people you aren't close with can see you is considered immature and a desperate plea for attention. It's like the attention wh**e who wears a very revealing bikini to a neighborhood family friendly barbecue.
I don't know where you live, but here 9 time out of 10 people take their shirt of, because it's hot, they are sweating or are at the beach/pool... it maybe something else, doing it in the public(city), but he was clearly on his own property and clearly working. Also the way the father reacted was more than rude, instead of friendly asking if they could put their shirts back on, he effectively demanded it. In my eyes he was just overreacting, overprotective and rude.

Well I don't see what the big deal is. I think the dads just a bit overprotective.

So what did you do? Did you put a shit back on? And let "The Man" win?

You should've went up to his fence and danced around blasting this on a stereo just to stick it to him:

No, but seriously. I can understand where he's coming from, but you're on your property so it's really none of his business...unless you were actually doing what I suggested; then it's the police's and his business.

I don't know what it's like in America but people in England walk around topless all the time and nobody's too bothered. It's your yard so you can do what you like.

To hell with people with kids, I would've told him to piss off. As long as I'm not working completely naked he can fuck off.

I'm talking about those who do it knowingly in front of other people who aren't their friends or family. If you see some guy walking around town or a fair with their shirt off, they're at least on some level doing it to show off or seem cool.

You need to get some backbone good sir. Go out and buy yourself a spedo just incase he ever tries shit like that again. Or you may be able to find yourself some female friends who also dont mind going topless.

Or they are a roofer, jogging, doing yard work, mowing the lawn, its hot as hell out, or mabey they are just randy. There are tons of reasons that people go shirtless and next to none of them are to show off or seem cool.
We'll have to agree to disagree. And I said in public. Mowing your lawn is not in public.

Plus in order for someone to feel comfortable taking off their shirt, they have to be proud or at the very least not embarrassed by their physique, which means that on some level they are doing it to show off.

Again I'm not saying everyone does. But generally your 20 somethings are doing it as some sort of masculinity contest.

Next time you're out in your yard, wear a pair of jean short shorts and start hip thrusting casually. I'm sure the bloke will be disturbed enough to never talk to you again.

I think we should just leave it at that. Since I find your logic absolutely rediculous and on top of that you are making mass generalizations about people you know absolutely nothing at all about.

By the way not being embarrassed your physique does not mean you are showing it off. You are honestly kind of sounding extremely jealous right now, your not like really out of shape are you? Because that is honestly the only way I could see anybody making your arguement is if they are really out of shape and jealous of other people.
When you want to just "leave it at that", I suggest you don't start insulting the person or questioning they have ulterior motives for saying what they did.

I am not at all out of shape. 5'10" 160-170lbs. The fact that you suggested I was jealous or that only people that are out of shape make that claim is an example of the masculinity contest I was talking about.
