Sorry, but I had to do it. I watched Higurashi and Ergo Proxy aaaaaaaaaages ago, and after 9 more animes and 6 or so I gave up on, they're still by far my favourites and I'm struggling to find something I like nearly as much as them.

What I really liked about them, I'm not sure. But I find that all the ones I like are intense, insane, mindfucky, or any mix of those. Anime that doesn't touch on one or more of those just... doesn't appeal to me for some reason. I know there'll be exceptions, but better safe than sorry.

The other's I've seen are:

FLCL
Sukisho
Highschool Of The Dead
Blue Sub No. 6
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan
Serial Experiments Lain
Azumanga Daioh (even something like this would be great)
Welcome To The NHK
Darker Than Black

And the ones I gave up on:

Minami-Ke (dear god no)
Texhnolyze (not because it was bad)
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (not because it was bad)
Gurren Lagann
...some others I can't remember.

So yeah, any help is appreciated. :>

I'm currently watching "Magical shopping arcade Abenobashi" right now and cant help but smile the whole way through the episodes. If your looking for something light-hearted that could be a good choice.

You fail to mention exactly what it is about the animes you did like that appealed to you, and what it is about the ones you didn't that that you didn't like. Without this information, people are just going to randomly throw you their favourite anime which will make this thread as worthless as browsing any other thread of its type. If you can give us some more specific information on what you're looking for and what constitutes "good" in your eyes, you're more likely to get some good responses out of people.

That's still quite vague but I'll work with it.

Best anime I've seen that fits that criteria is a feature film called Perfect Blue. See if you can track it down, it's not recent so you can even find it on VHS. Sure, it does fall into the usual trappings of the genre with some irritating characterisations and quite a few pointless scenes that have no purpose except to cater to misogyny, but if you can look past that it's the best anime mindfuck for your money, and one that actually means something, not a stitched-together insulting rush job collage like the end of NVE.

Have you tried Hellsing and it's OVAs? The OVAs are much better but unfinished...still.

Edit: Also, Deadman Wonderland.

How about that /a/, huh. Pretty much everything on that list is worth giving a shot, I've got more of these if you need more anime.

That's fantastic of you, but you should probably remove the torrent links!

If you don't mind cheap laughs, Excel Saga is good. Just two tips: Get a subbed version if possible because Excel's American voice is unbearable to say the least, and the final episode is very NSFW. Ran for 26 episodes, and (to my knowledge) never had any more than that.

(It's also based off a manga series of the same name.)

Edit:

Be prepared to be disappointed. It kinda ends very abruptly with a few issues left hanging.

I'd recommend Durarara!! and Baccano!

They're both 'real-world+one-supernatural-feature' series that have a number of interlocking plotlines. Both funny (Durarara!! more so), action packed, and good rides.

Based on you having finished Serial Experiments Lain, I'd recommend Paranoia Agent (which is as much of a headfuck as SEL). And for a similar art style but more like... well, none but a tiny bit like Azumanga Daioh (switch out the real-world setting, less surreal, less straight-up comedic), watch Haibane Renmei (it's an acquired taste, read the AnimeNewsNetwork review to get what I mean).

Try Paranoia Agent. It's got plenty of mind-screwiness to last (I think) 12 episodes. Or Speed Grapher. Those are both worth the watch. I can't tell you which language track to watch, because they're both fine, so flip a coin or something.

That's kind of the point.

Dude. Not every dub is automatically bad by nature of being a dub. Just because Disney censored Sailor Moon badly, and 4kids ruined Tokyo Mew Mew (among others, but that one sticks out), doesn't mean everyone who dubs anime does it badly. Pull your head out of your arse.

Edit: In fact, you even say the dub of those is fine, so why did you tell me that the point of an English dub is to give unfitting voices to all the characters? Or am I being a complete dickwad again and jumping to conclusions? And if that's the case, why did you cut me off at the mention of Excel's English voice?

Heres an idea

Got to My Anime List

Look at Top Animes

......

sorry, I was going to be smug, because I thought theyd be terrible, but theyre actually all really good. Not the best ones, but really good. Oh, Mushi-Shi is number 15, ok they are the best ones.

If you arent going to follow my questionable advice, watch Eden Of The East. It seems like itd fit your tastes, and its very good. End on a cliffhanger, but theres two movies to wrap it up. I wont bother summarizing the plot. You have the name, you have google, you have a keyboard, go nuts.

It's not that. It just gets my blood up when someone says something along the lines of "I do not like an aspect this for exactly what the whole supposed to be." Vague, but I hope you get my point. Saying you don't like Excel's English voice is along the lines of saying "I don't like Gears of War's scenery because it is so dark and gritty." That is precisely why it is the way it is: Gears of War is dark and gritty, the scenery just adds to it. Excel's voice is unbearably annoying because Excel is unbearably annoying, the voice just drives the point home. It doesn't matter whether or not you like Gears of War, I'm just trying to make a point.

I often find myself saying these things to people who say they don't like The Princess Bride because it's cliche and predictable. Not quite the same thing, but close enough.

Well, then I guess the Japanese version is worse, because I can actually put up with that version of Excel for 25 minutes and 'that goes against what it's about'. Other than that, my only gripe with the English dub is that on the DVDs I have, the subtitles on Japanese text (such as billboards or Sumiyoshi) only appears with the Japanese language track.

So much for sub vs dub wars...

Huh. I found the two about equally annoying.

I really should rewatch that sometime. I could go for some wacky comedy. Thanks!

Actually... it might be because I don't know enough Japanese for Excel's monologues to get in the way of anything, since I just read the other character's lines in the subtitles. ...Maybe that is why I hate Excel's English voice.

All's well that ends well, right? I'm sorry I said you had your head stuck up your arse.

Don't worry about it. It's not the worst thing you could have said.

I don't watch very much anime, but of the ones I have seen Full Metal Panic, Full Metal Alchemist (both series), and Elfen Lied are my favorites.

Make sure that if you watch Full Metal Panic that you don't give up on it, the second raid is a lot better then the actual series (it's just a continuation of the story).

And Elfen Lied has a lot of gore and nudity, but it will rip your very soul to pieces. It's awesome.

Full Metal Alchemist is just an all around great anime. The dub for Brotherhood hasn't all been released yet, but the whole original series has been dubbed.
