On a whim, I decided to purchase the two Knights of the Old Republic games on Steam, having already played through (most of) KotOR II before, I decided it would at least be a good idea to play its predecessor.

Anyways, both games are great and it was money well spent, but that's not what this thread is about.

This thread is about how the two protagonists in the KotOR games have canonized backstories of their own.

[rant] It's a relatively minor complaint, but its something that just bugs me. Why bother giving me the choice to be male/female, or light side goody-goody/dark side asshole if you're just going to tell me what is supposed to happen anyways?

I always liked the idea of Revan being a woman and Meetra Surik (the exile) being a man, I dunno why, it just sits better with me. While there's nothing stopping me from going ahead and gender-bending Revan and Meetra, it still doesn't change the fact that the official, canon story for the two characters is plainly laid out. [/rant]

Anyways, here is a thread for my fellow escapists to vent about the little trivial things in games that irritate them.

Trivial things that piss you off? guest characters in Soul Calibur I dont know why but I hate them all even in the rare case they are done well like Link I will accept Yoshimitsu but all the rest can get stuffed.

Another Trivial thing would be the change in voice actor of Carmelita Fox in EVERY Sly Cooper game, I bought the collection so I found it especially jarring.

EDIT : Got one more I just found in P4A in Mitsurus story mode sometimes they colour the white of her eye the same colour as her hair basically it looks like they forgot to colour it in sometimes seeing as her hair almost totally covers her one eye I dont know why but that really pissed me off probably because I am enjoying the game so much. There are also typos and at least one instance of being flat out wrong (they mention Yu being in two places at the same time when its obvious they meant to reference another character instead).

Interestingly, Revan is way more interesting as a woman and The exile is way better as a man, since he gets the handmaiden as a party member and the dynamic between him and Atris is way more interesting.

Remember when they put Yoda into the game? And NOBODY could touch him because he was so tiny? Good times. XD

OT: I hate Draft Champ Select in LoL more and more lately. Just let me play TF Mid... I'm a consistently high pick most games so when I ask the last pick to pick me TF and i pick him Leona, the MOMENT the other team picks Lux he goes "right, i'm picking you Talon. He counters Lux"

*locks Talon*

Lucky i'm a fast learner dammit. My number of Talon games are not even in double digits yet... Better lock him in Ranked! Genius!

I mean it's far from the worst things to happen (Support Shaco OP) but that was one of the more... Odd moments lately. People seem to forget what individual skill is. I don't lock the right card consistently (shut up, I do) only because i'm just naturally talented y'know. So much time spent on TF, it's not even funny.

This sums it up nicely:

I can't play games like Soul calibur and Mortal kombat , because there is a block button . Yes my gripe is that there is a button dedicated to blocking . Can someone say trivial ?

Also , the way Yuffie's ( for FF7) name is pronounced . I always called her YUH - FEE , but apparently her name is pronounced YOU-FEE . I can't even look at her anymore , that's why i can't play KH .

Speaking of KH ( A game i couldn't get past a few hours of play )I hate that disney characters are in the game. Makes me feel that they are trying to get me to like the game soley because of my nostalgia for Disney and my love for Final fantasy . It didn't work . Seems so childish.

Well the first KH certainly bet on people wanting a blend of FF and Disney, but most games after the first have much more original content, with both Disney and FF taking a back seat (sure, they still visit Disney worlds, but they're not that important).

On topic, the currencies in Borderlands 2. You have the regular old money, Eridium, Seraph Crystals and Torgue Tokens, with money and Eridium being completely worthless after a point.

Team Fortress 2:

Friendly Pyros refusing to extinguish burning teammates.
How n00bish and inconsiderate do you have to BE to DO something like that?
It's like they are unaware that M2 exists, that it has a function outside of reflecting explosives and pushing people backwards. Hell, it's a miracle that some of them even figure that stuff out.

In the end you, don't have to do it.
Sometimes you can't do it. It's a small little annoyance.
But Goddamn.

Disney and FF were always on the back seat to me. If you take a close look, the Disney worlds are irrelevant to the over-arching plot of the games, containing micro-stories that play like Cliff Notes of the original movies while remaining uninvolved with the main plot of whichever game we're playing. It wouldn't matter who you met or what you did in any of these worlds, the plot moves on a totally different rail track. It's really about Sora and Riku and Kairi and Org. XIII and the three Keyblade blokes from BBS and Xehanort and... etc. Mickey just hitches a ride.

The canon exists because most media forms (the primary being film) in which Star Wars exists are non-interactive. Because of that, there must be a canon version of Revan and the Exile and their actions.
In KOTOR 2, you can still pick Revan's gender and alignment in your first conversation with Atton, and it will change the plot in several ways.

Best part?

Meetra Surik (the Exile) is canonically female but her appearance doesn't match any of those available. In addition BOTH Disciple and the Handmaiden join her canonically and you can't get both. Which is really damn annoying if you prefer to play canonically like I do because it means you never get the Handmaiden. Which means you don't get the Precognition ability which is AMAZING.

I ended up modding the hell out of the game to let me play it as I wanted to. Female exile with canon looks plus Handmaiden. Glad that its so flexible. Whole thing was driving me absolutely nuts. I spent about five hours one weekend trying to get about a dozen mods working together properly (one of them to fix the messy widescreen setup).

Also I prefer Revan as a female too. Dunno why although if pushed for a reason I agree with Frission in that she is more interesting.

I'm a little confused. A friend of mine told me that when you play kotor 2, you decide what the cannon was through a conversation. They call Reven a man and you have the option to say "No, she was a woman" and then they'll say "Oh, you're right"

League of Legends: Junglers that cannot jungle. I'm sick of getting Jungle Teemo or, god forbid, JUNGLE SORAKA. Seriously, I'm sick of people rolling champions that cannot jungle.

DotA2: See above except worse.

Fallout: New Vegas: The rifle iron sights are just useless on the Varmint Rifle.

Minecraft: The fabasen.

Defiance: The fact there is a TV show of it.

DEFCON: "So you know that alliance we have? Well, now it's 'had'"

HA, that's the same reason why I didn't try out the KH series for quite a few years. Then my friend finally convinced me to play KH2 and to my amazement I enjoyed it. Not making fun of you or anything just saying that I understand your line of reasoning.

Anyway, what grinds my gears?

Well, any game with cover mechanics that allows you to shoot around cover, but for some reason our hero lacks the ability shoot over what he's hiding behind. This especially true of the Metal Gear Solid series, although I can forgive all the games before MGS4, because during their releases cover based mechanics were still in their infantile years. However, by the time MGS4 came out it annoyed me that they still didn't fix this problem especially since other games before it had managed to do so.

The fact that pretty much every grand strategy game has terrible diplomacy. Seriously, I challenge you to name me anything (Civ, Hearts of Iron, etc.) where the AI diplomacy is functional and accurate.

That every RTS boils down to, whoever spams 20 troops first wins the match, point of RTS to me is it is meant to be slower paced and a long game but seems every RTS i play online a match goes for 15 minutes because you have people that rush it.

When game series are drastically changed during there IP to something that does not resemble the rest of the series, would be a decent stand alone game but taints the entire series (Dead Space 3, Bioshock Infinite to name couple recent ones)

When people t-bag, it just infuriates me so much when i see that in games, kill me i don't care but t-bagging is a huge dick move, which results in me spending the entire rest of the match hunting that single person down over and over to make them pay.

Might come back and list some more later but this is all i can think of atm.

I think the OP means that it bugs him (or her?) a little - playing the KotOR games now with the knowledge that the canonical gender/alignment/appearance/etc of both protagonists has been set in stone. Hence, the title of the thread.

Yeah, you can decide what you what the characters to be like in the game, but both Revan and Meetra have fully fleshed out backstories that are canon and set in stone.

Granted, like somebody else already mentioned, it was kind of necessary. You can't very well have an ambiguously dressed, constantly masked hero walking around in an official representation of a specific storyline... unless that's what you were going for in the first place, I guess.

It still bugs me though.

Wind Waker is, in my opinion, the best Zelda ever made. Whenever I lend it out to friends though, they always hand it back to me within two days. Why?

The Forsaken Fortress.

Forced stealth levels are relatively common, but putting a somewhat difficult one right at the beginning was a horrible idea. It's forced a lot of people to ragequit out of one of the best games ever before they get to experience anything incredible.

Also, to a much lesser extent, the swinging lantern sections on the pirate ship.

Those retarded areas where you get dropped into a stage, you get two seconds of walking then another cutscene activates.

"REMEMBER THIS?! LOOK AT IT. LOOK AT IT AND LAUGH YOU HYENA" type of "humour".

Useless junk done for the sake of something.(Really bright lens flare - BF3, One minute of pistol reloading - Risen 2)

Unskippable splash screens, especially if a previous game in the series allowed skipping(Mass effect)

Going "This game is action packed fun" or something similar as a gameplay description.(The EA MoBA)

Not having voice chat in games that need them, having voice chat in games that don't.( Smite, Tribes for the former, although VGS somewhat negates that - Call of Duty for the latter.)

Tutorials that aren't fun, aren't representative of the game and think of me as a complete idiot. (Every FPS ever with Blood Dragon as an exception, Drakengard 2)

Plot twists so predictable or pulled out of someone's space monkey's butt.(Your boss is evil! - The space child from ME3.)

Forcing my arse into a mandatory stealth section, bonus you're a twat points if it's worse on the bad stealth section rating system.
Rating system:
Plain Bad: Something like Sly Cooper, where stealth was an option, just not forced.
Super Bad: In a stealth game where you can muck up all you like and still get away with it provided you're skilled enough, you get an instant game over.
Powerglove Bad: Sudden shift of gameplay from guns blazing to stealth and the controls are as much as suited to stealth as a sentient arse is suited to marry a cow.
Micheal Jackson Bad: Dirge of Cerberus. Everything is so crap it's easy but difficult at the same time.

Steam doesn't let you know how many gigabytes the game is unless you've bought it.

And that's what grinds my gears.

Gray Matter: The game is a point and click adventure and it gives you points- like games of old- for moving the story along and performing certain actions. I spent over and hour trying to find the bonus points I was missing and finally gave up and checked a walkthrough only to find that because I looked at an item before I talked to a couple of people, I couldn't get those bonus points any more. Couldn't they have just left the dialogue option there? It was only a couple quips I missed but it reminded me how aggravating, and often broken, some older adventure games could be.

Road Rash (PC): I'm not sure about the other versions of the game but I always hated that they had a bunch of different songs in the menu screen and then when you actually get in the game it's the same tune on a loop over and over again for every race. Even if it was only a handful of songs it would have been nice to hear something different during the races.

Batman Arkham Asylum: I don't think the intercom needs to be broadcasting non-stop. Looking for the Riddler stuff was torture hearing the same two or three lines on repeat over and over again.

Portal 2: the game takes over Steam voice chat so during loading screens you can't talk to your co-op partner or anyone else that you happen to be talking to.
