True, but at least I laid out the guidelines beforehand. Nice list by the way. Also, a lot of the games on mine and most people others list is more Devil May Cry style than anything else. The games on my list are more arcade style, as most God of War style games focus more on the narrative and adventure aspect. For example, you have games like Darksiders (the closest we're ever going to get to a modern Soul Reaver), Enslaved, Batman: AA, and The Force Unleashed that the fit the "criteria" Simmons was going for. I know you said you are not a big fan of this genre, but you seem to have a decent amount on your list. Hell, even the Soul Reaver games could technically count. Yes, there more up the adventure alley, but seeing what they inspired later on, it makes everything much more obvious upon retrospect. Big respects too you.aozgolo said:I kind-of dislike the term "action game" as it's way too broad, I mean there's so many uniquely different styles of games that could fall under it. The games you describe seem mostly God-of-War style to me which rarely hold my interest long. I guess if I were to look at the action games I do like, just based off what is installed on Steam...

I guess never having played the DMC series I don't quite know the differences. I'll admit some of these games I've barely played such as Force Unleashed and Sleeping Dogs, but I intend to thus why they're installed. I tend to go more towards open world style like Bully, GTA, AC, and even Brutal Legend (which is kind of a RTS in disguise). I also have both Darksiders and all the Arkham games except the newest, I just haven't installed those yet until I've bothered beating the first.CoCage said:True, but at least I laid out the guidelines beforehand. Games like DMC or its kind are all about getting the best or highest ranks in each stage. You're time for speed, combo/style points, whether (healing) items were used, and if you died. Dying would generally drop your grade to a low rank by default. DMC1 had D to S (SS and SSS in 3 & 4 respectively), Bayonetta had Stone to Pure Platinum, and Viewtiful Joe had D to Rainbow V.aozgolo said:I guess never having played the DMC series I don't quite know the differences. I should also point out that while it does indeed appear that I have a lot of these type of games, I'm also a recovering addict of Steam Disease (buying games because they go on sale/appear in bundles) and I actually have probably 3 or 4 times as many RPGs as I do these sort.
I'll disagree with you there, the genre advanced by a wide margin. Ok, sure games like Dynamite Cop (fun game) and Beserk weren't selling like crazy, but DMC set a standard. You had games like Shinobi (2002, PS2), Viewtiful Joe (2003), Ninja Gaiden (2004) God of War (2005), and No More Heroes (2007) move the genre forward in some way. Not everything was perfect, but there was variety. Things didn't become real bad until everyone and their grandma were aping GoW. That's when problems rose mostly from Western studios.hanselthecaretaker said:Guess my opinion would be, tying into Ezekiel's point, that this style of game really hasn't seemed to advance much since the mid nineties. IMO the original DMC was the exceptional peak in almost ever aspect, and even NGB was over rated the farther it went along. Truly a case of difficulty for difficulty's sake. As a kid I didn't think as much of it of course, but I have to wonder now if things like, well, everything besides the combat even matter in the vast majority of these games...or ever will.

Guess I could put,
7. Shinobi (ps2)
Ninja Gaiden 2 is terrible.CoCage said:BTW that part about Ninja Gaiden, you are right. Granted, I only played half of II on X360 before quitting completely. I've only played a little of Sigma's from a neighbor's down the hall during my freshman year living on campus. Yet Sigma seemed way more fair by comparison. I can't even stand the NES games. Shinobi is my thing and those games, mainly the 2D classics, are way more fun and evenly challenged. Shinobi games knew to be hard without putting so much fake difficulty bullshit in the mix.

Black only has a couple encounters that are poorly done. The difficulty is perfect, but it has a steep curve, like Dark Souls, if you will (yay overused comparison!). Black has the best implementation of difficulty I have ever experienced. Every time you go up (normal -> hard -> very hard...etc) the games changes the enemies you fight, so it is a fairly fresh experience every difficulty. There are minibosses that only appear on hard difficulty and up, and boy are they fun to fight! The enemy ai is fantastic.
You should give it a try if you have an xbox 360 lying around. I saw NGB in a used game store for like 10 bucks. A steal.
I still have my 360 in perfect condition. Does the disc version work fine? I know it's downloadable from XBOX Live, but I prefer having a physical copy. So no odd bugs or game breaking glitches?

And the game is still graphically pretty good!

She's using gun-chucks and even does the Bruce Lee scream! Mine still can't beat yours though.

I think I had to download a backwards compatibility update to play it from the disc, but yeah the disc version works great.CoCage said:I still have my 360 in perfect condition. That reminds me, I got to go back and finish W101.Kibeth41 said:Wonderful 101 is probably my favorite action game. It's really fun and probably the best Power Rangers game I can think of.
And I've got to respect it for taking some risks with the controls, and they work really well.
If I remember correctly just the first two chapters. I still have a lot to go through. Right now I just gotta nier: automata so it may take a minute. I'll probably start on the weekend since I have a lot more time for now.Kibeth41 said:Out of curiosity, how far did you get?CoCage said:That reminds me, I got to go back and finish W101.Kibeth41 said:Wonderful 101 is probably my favorite action game. I'd say the last stretch of the game is definitely my favorite. It gets about as over the top as Bayonetta. And the bosses do nothing but improve mechanically.
You're not wrong, as it is a TPS that forms as a primitive brawler with its melee attacks. Especially if you're playing as Jake.Athennesi said:Resident Evil VI...technically it's an action/horror, but who are we kidding here?
Not really sure if it's one of the best or worst action games out there, quality is really all over the place. Level design is a mess, QTE after QTE, meh shooting plus poor cover mechanics, and some very annoying driving sequences and overlong boss battles.
But when you learn it's mechanics and become a bit better at it, melee+gun+movement flows extremely well together.
Incredibly stupid, but fun game overall...like someone at Capcom saw WWE for the first time and said: "Let's do this, only with zombies!".
See, I think the mechanics are pretty good once you learn them, which makes Mercenaries really fun. But the game itself - like you said, story, level design, the QTE thing and the schizo "now you're on a car/plane/bike/avalanche" ambush - is insufferable.Athennesi said:Resident Evil VI...technically it's an action/horror, but who are we kidding here?
