"YOLO" Has Become the New "LEEEEROY JENKIIIINS"

I was thinking about this the other day. I've been playing video games since the NES days, so I've pretty much been around since the dawn of contemporary "video game culture". During this time we've witnessed the rapid evolution of video game slang and jargon. Whether it's using pre-existing words improperly or employing completely new words/phrases, this hobby-specific jargon has made it's way through different facets of our culture. It's fascinating really.

I play a lot of RPGs and used to play a lot of MMOs. During that time I used the word "proc" a lot, and still do. Curious, I looked up it's actual meaning and origin the other day. Turns out I had a perfect understanding of it's meaning, but it apparently doesn't have a clear origin. No one is quite sure where it comes from, though there are plenty of theories.

So what the hell does the thread title mean? Well, while the concept of video game jargon is interesting I actually wanted to make this thread to discuss what words/phrases you often use while playing games. Me and a friend of mine have gotten into the nasty habit of yelling, "YOLOOOO!" when we're doing something reckless in a multiplayer game. It's gotten to the point where we're even doing it out-of-character during D&D encounters.

So yeah, I think I've crafted a rather confused OP but I am confident you guys can find something to talk about here.

I don't know. Maybe you'd change your mind if you saw a krogan charging recklessly into the enemy while shouting in a gruff voice, "YOLLLOOOO!"

ehh where i'm from, the people who use "YOLO"...

biggest douchebags and waste of space on the planet, so the words kind of been tainted to the point that unless someone is using it as satire and not using it to justify being a complete fuckwad, i hate the word.

so yeah, i stick to other terminology, but even then i hardly hear people use "leroy jenkins" anymore, unless it's this kid:

i have no idea why, but for quite a while (probably 6-7 years ago) me and a bunch of friends proceeded to use many forms of "coolsweet", if you could fit "cool" and sweet" into a sentence, you bet your ass it was going to be said. e.g.

*gets headshot using quickscoping aim assist*

"holy shit, gtfo noob, your coolsweet shit doesn't fly in here"


that being said, as jokes/taunts sometimes me and my friends will use the phrase "U NEED PIRROW?" (asian accent asking if you need a pillow for that fucking butthurt you just suffered) or we'll pronounce outloud "jajajajaja" and "kekekekeke" as trolling taunts, people get quite peeved about it, it ends up being hilarious XD

I regularly shout leroy jenkins, and I regularly chastise people for using yolo (and/or slap them, depending on how well I know them). So not for me. Leroy is where it's at.

Oh, Leeroy Jenkins was quite popular. And it was the exact equivalent of YOLO in-game, also out of game, too.

Yeah, perhaps I wasn't exactly clear in the OP but I have never used YOLO "seriously". We always use it in a sarcastic sense.

I've heard several people use YOLO seriously here at my university. It gave me Kepral's Syndrome. Although people probably think the same thing when they hear me use it ironically. I blame Ray. Meh, it doesn't really bother me. I mean, yolo, right?

I think YOLO might've taken over Leroy Jenkins simply because YOLO can be used in a wider variety of situations. "Unleash the Sands of Time? Why not? YOLOOOO!!"

They perform much the same function, it really just depends what you want your source to be. Personally I still use Leeroy as a charge shout, because yolo is more for self-referential humour at something stupid you're about to do and doesn't have the same hints of intending to fight to the death and being fully motivated. I don't know. But I do prefer Leeroy.

It's fun to use YOLO ironically around my friends because I know they hate it. My gaming group use it too but again, ironically.

Emperor save me on the day I start saying it legitimately.

YOLO is quicker to say in a tense situation while gaming too. Not that I'm making excuses.
