Well... other than Skyrim and Shadowmere (Iloveyoushadow) then probably in RTS games, it's a bit weird... but in an RTS game I tend to get attached to a unit that despite all odds survives, and is crowned king of badassery. Most recently was on SupCom: FA, I was cornered by my friend, out at sea with no resources and just a few Megaliths (Giant walking spider factories) and this one Megalith was just so badass, he would walk up the beach onto an island and blast away my opponents fatboys (Giant caterpillar factories)pop out a few engineers and then submerge and carry on.

He survived for ages, so I even went to the effort of renaming him Fatboy Hunter... Alas, he did perish when I lost the game. But yeah, units like that, since I tend to be very gung ho on RTS games and just throw units at enemies even if they might lose, so it's all the more special when they don't.

OT:
Not sure I've ever developed an attachment quite like that in a game. Like some other posters in here, I'll try to do stuff like keeping the Halo Marines or EDF 2017 soldiers alive. But I don't think it's really due to any sort of emotional bond with them.

There was one time though where my university roommates and I got bored and tried to play a game of X-COM...

None of us had ever played the game before, and we had no manual, so we had no idea what the hell we were doing. We were failing pretty hard. So in the last battle we played before giving up on the game we had lost all of our soldiers except for one... his name was Wolfgang Gunkel. We had intended to have Wolfgang breach a room and clear it with a grenade... but he somehow managed to kill himself with the grenade, taking down three enemies with him. I'm not really sure why my roommates and I got so attached to Wolfgang, but after that, we started naming every video game character after him. At the time of our graduation, the Gunkel family tree extended out to Wolfgang Gunkel XXVI. It's been two years, and I still from time to time name characters after him.

I was very attached to Mjoll the Lioness in Skyrim, she seemed a good choice for a bride and was handy in a fight. I must have spent close to 20 hours adventuring with her, but deciding to be more stealthy I had sent her to our house. Now I'm not sure if it's some sort of glitch or not but it seems that when sent home everything I had equipped to my wife was off and she was just hanging out in her panties. So at first I think what a great wife I have, and then I see that jerk (some guy that's with her when you meet) in my house with my naked wife. So I followed that ************ down a dark alley way and gutted him.

I figured at this point I can't be leaving this ***** at home. So we spend another 30 hours together really finishing up this game, and she is just decked out at this point with all sorts of daedric and ebony gear. However, now it is time for the final battle, and I really don't need my wife getting in the way so I send her home. I come back after my hard fought victory on top of a bloody mountain, and there she is sitting at the table naked again. After I make sure there are no dudes in my house I decide that she has surely learned her lesson. In the back of my mind I know I compulsively have to check that all her items are still there, and what do you know she's got everything, well everything that wasn't equipped. The rest, well the rest vanished and I gutted her.

50+ hours is quite a long video game relationship, but she really shouldn't have crossed me!

Got real attached to my kevlar like horse in Mount and blade, mostly because of it being close to invincible!

One time it got hit with a axe in its forehead which stayed there for the rest of the battle,i named him/her "yxhörning" which means axecorn or removing the uni in unicorn and replacing it with axe.

Got real pissed when a bastard later shot said horse and forced me to get a new one..

No horse can replace axecorn!

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned this yet, but nobody who posts in this thread should ever play Fire Emblem. I grow attached to every character, and it is impossible for me to be willing to let anybody die.

It is hands down the most stressful video game experience available.

+1. Regardless of where I'm going, even if it was just walking around the Citadel, Garrus would tag along.

I loved my horse in RDR, but I never actually figured out how he died. I just called my horse one time and it was a different horse. Since then, I've agonized over where I went wrong constantly. It haunts my dreams.

I tend to go berserk in Skyrim if someone other than Lucien so much as touches Shadowmere.

*facing dragon*
Oh yeah! BRING IT ON!

*hears a forsworn attacking Shadowmere*
GET AWAY FROM HIM YOU *****!

It has caused me a great many deaths from getting Ice-Breath shouted up my ass and even though I know Shadowmere is a tough one to kill, even by Skyrim horse standards, I will always run back to save you.

So, have you found the Egg of Mantumbi yet?
Bring a cd of Tom jones' greatest hit, cause its a long walk through the blinding whiteness of the Tuuuuuuuuuundra!
(Recognising both of your references makes me immune from being irrelevant)
The Tundra is no respecter of fashion, unless you make an attachment (?!) with a Polar Bear.

As far as I can think, I only have two companions I genuinely love and don't want to die: Faendal the elf in Skyrim is one, because he was the first companion who asked to join my party. Only playing Morrowind before this, I didn't realize you could have companions. When we went into this cave and had to kill a bunch of sorceresses, we tried fighting. I died and reloaded several times. Once, I finally killed them. But I noticed that Faendal was dead. So I reloaded to attempt it again.

My second one is from an earlier Bethesda game, Dogmeat from Fallout 3. Never before have I seen a wolf kick so much ass. That thing's followed me around everywhere, has probably 5x more health than me, draws aggro, and can tank just about anything. Fuck all the human or robot companions, all I need is my dog! And when I get to level 22, I'm taking the "Puppies!" perk. If Dogmeat dies, his legacy will live on. Whenever he got whimpered from taking damage in combat, I'd rush in and start obliterating whatever was attacking him.

Another one that actually just came to mind is Bill from Left 4 Dead. Everyone probably feels this way: They didn't want to see Bill sacrifice himself to save others. He was the kick-ass 'Nam vet that kept everyone together. When I played The Sacrifice, I got a feeling like butterflies in the pit of my stomach, knowing that it was time for Bill to go.

Oh yes, and the horse from Shadow of the Colossus. No one can forget Agro, that beloved companion. One more, before I go on an even longer rant, is the Pikmin from...Pikmin. Hearing that death noise during a massive fight, or their drowning noise, always sent a chill up my spine.

My "Bad-a$$ Bulbasaur Named Benoit." I've had him since pokemon Red&Blue and keep transferring him over to the next game again and again. Don't even use him half the time, but he's my first Pokemon ever and I'll be damned if I give him up.

The gnome in Left 4 Dead 2. Seriously, me and my friends even named the thing, and just having one of us shouting 'YOU'RE NOT TAKING GNOMEY YOU BITCHES!' running to the safe room is one of the funniest things ever.

On the topic of Skyrim horses, there was the one quest where you sent to steal the Black-Briar horse, Frost, and give it to some guy in Riften. Well, I wanted to keep the horse, but failed the check that would let you do that, so my back-up plan was to just kill the guy and take the horse. So, I followed him after he took off riding, only to catch up to him and Frost fighting a bear.

The bear killed Frost.

I talked to the guy to scold him for his recklessness, but he didn't even notice the horse that I had so carefully stolen for him was dead! It was really disappointing, so my character's built-up rage at the apparent futility of his work led him to leave the jerk with an arrow through the skull. Just like one of those hilarious hats!

I always get attached to the first horse i get in open world games with them. This, however, is one of the most frustrating things about Skyrim for me; your horse is EVERYTHING'S bane of existence. Enemies don't care if you're smashing their face in with a mace, so long as they get to take a swipe at your horse. Frustrating as all hell. -_-

Also, in MMOs with pets, I always tend to stick with the first one I get. So there I am level 22 in Aion with my trusty companion frog/rabbit.

I always either carry it with me or find a safe place for Gorion's letter at the beginning of Baldur's Gate. It's just not something I would drop on the side of the road.

It's already been mentioned, but I developed a very real emotional attachment to Agro as I played Shadow of the Colossus. Agro was a necessary companion in order to feel sane in such a lonely world, which is why the fight with the final colossus had such an impact on me.

Damn, I loved that horse ;-;
