As a LARPer, I have found that the sword and shield combo is quite good. However, one of my favorite weapons is the polearm - great reach, and sometimes that makes all the difference.
And bows fire rather slowly - good for getting the first hit in, but if the enemy charges you are dropping the bow for better weaponry.

I would bring my Cardboard Sword of Flailing (+1)
And one plastic tube of Tennis Balls of Imaginative Elemental Power. (up to 6d6 of damage)

Medieval Reenacting: Probably a <a=http://www.superiorsteel.co.nz/uploads/66530/images/91728/GDFB_-_XB0099_--_PoleAxe.jpg>Pollaxe or a <a=http://callitaweasel.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/zweihander_b.jpg>Zweihander. I've already got a bit of experience with polearms, if not specifically those two, but those two were some of the most useful medieval weapons, plus they look totally badass.

LARPing: A suicide pill. I may be a bit of a geek, but I never wanna sink THAT low.
Most LARPers are not the geeks/nerds you think they are. Most people in the club im part of are socially skilled people who work in professional environments. Lawyer, Video game designer, data analyst, engineer... We are adults who have realized that just because we are adults, it doesnt mean we have to stop playing games and having fun in our free time. Its like a more immersive D&D.

I armor up with Studded Leather and dual wield. Longsword main hand, dagger offhand. I also carry several throwing knives and a light crossbow.

I would use a Bec de Corbin. It is a hammer and pick head with a spear tip on top of a 6 foot poll.

I would have a standard sword and shield... covered in actual blood.
... And a horse. You gotta have a horse. You just gotta.

You know those giant swords Final Fantasy characters use? Or the one that Nightmare uses in Soul Calibur? Those. They can act as a shield and a weapon.
