Against the grain deffinitely get a smoother shave, however you have more of a risk of cutting yourself or irritating your skin. The only time I ever do it is if I have a brand new razor and if I really want to look extra smooth. Other then that I usually just go with the grain.

I just pull it out with my hands for extra smoothness. Then I drink the blood that's coming out of my cheeks. I'm that hardcore.

In all seriousness though, against the grain cause my facial hair kinda grows downwards and I can't shave any other way.

Well, instead of my hair grain going down to my chin, it goes down the left side of my face, then keeps on going up the right side of my face. It's weird, I know, but I still shave from my ear to my chin, so it goes with the grain on the left side of my face and against the grain on the right side.

Really, I never noticed much of a difference, going against the grain hurts a little, but other than that, they're just about the same in terms of silky smoothness.

I do both, with the hair at first to get it short and then against the hair to try and minimize the stubble. The ladies don't like the stubble . . . I sound like a damn fool.

I just have a great big bushy beard! Actually I have a sort-of big-ish beard, and it's not really bushy. But when I shaved I went with the hairs.

I don't shave. But if I did, I would go with the grain. Just feels better, and I get less irritation afterwards.
But still, don't shave! Beards is the shit!

I always go with the grain, less resistance, less irritation...less blotchy skin. I think that dragging a blade across my face is a pretty silly thing to be doing, so I'm going to do the least damage possible.

I go sideways. Guffaw guffaw.

I use an electric shaver, so once I've gone one way I just go back the other.
But for what it's worth, I start by going with the hair. Feels more comfortable.

Even using an electric razor I have problems if I shave against the grain the first time (yes, apparently I have a dainty little girly face) but going against just doesn't seem to get it all. So I shave once with the grain and then again against the grain immediately afterward.

Edit: Wow. I always thought this was a pretty weird thing to do. Now I'm wondering how many people DON'T do both.

With the grain won't shave as close but is recommended for sensitive skin, against the grain gets closer but can irritate some people. I do both, don't get any irritation and shaving with the grain leaves me with an immediate shadow.

I go with the grain, well I used to, then I stopped shaving. The reason why I go with the grain is well.. Danny Glover. When I picked that razor up, for the first time in my life, I thought "What am I supposed to do exactly?" I remembered Danny, and did as he told.
