ive wondered this to. like in shows like scrubs and a few others they mention things like why didnt the medical school teach them to speak spanish.

to me you should only have to learn the official language of the country, any other languages are bonuses and it seem disrespectful and rude to expect someone to speak your language when your in their country.

like if i was holidaying somewhere i would maybe learn some phrases but if i move to a non english country i would start to learn the language, take some classes etc.

you should speak the language to stop being an outsider in the country

Can someone please explain to me how it is a bad thing to expect people living in a country that predominantly speaks English to speak English? If I permanently move to France and expect everyone there to learn English instead of me learning French that would make me a bit of an asshole but if you do it in the U.S.A it's fine? Why is it wrong to want people to speak the language of the county they live in
French is indigenous to France; English is to England; Cherokee, Sioux and the other 54 Native American languages were spoken long before the West even knew of the Americas. English is an immigrant language to the US, what right does it have over any other immigrant language? Monolingual trolls, they're everywhere.

Is that too much to ask?
Yes. You can't ask someone something if neither of you speak the same language, now can you?

OT: I agree. People can speak whatever language they want in private, but we shouldn't have to accommodate whatever their native language is. They are living here by choice and they should respect the fact that we are an English speaking country.

100 years ago during the great migration from Europe, those immigrants came and busted their asses to learn and adapt to American society and culture. Immigrants today come here and expect everything to be the same as home.
That is an erroneous conclusion. Those people you're getting that only speak their language? Those are the parents. The kids do learn the language and statistically they don't teach their own children the language of their fathers. So those Europeans who came and learned the language? Untrue. Their children did.

Also, the belief that people come to the United States because they want to is also misinformed. A lot of people from Mexico move because their families are starving. Contrary to popular belief, some people don't WANT to be here. Weird eh? I can name at least nine seperate people who work here and send almost all their money to their family in Mexico.

Not just starvation, there is also the crime syndicate in mexico to worry about. Los Zetas, a gang who's headquarters is in Zacatecas are pretty much terrorists who are trying to get a squeeze on the drug supply lines. My uncle, who was an important member of his community had the crap beaten out of him in a dusty road, his car stolen, and a few choice words about how he better not be intruding on their business anymore. That was actually very nice of them, not to torture, ransom then kill him.
It's a wonder there are still people in Mexico.

If I moved to China or Argentina I would at least make the attempt to learn the primary language of the region. To expect newcomers to do the same is not too much to ask, is it? Although, I truly don't know what the dominant language is in America right now to be honest.
You have to remember that many of this people are quite poor, and may be unable to afford the money and time it takes to learn the language in a formal environment. They will pick up the language eventually (at least a pidgin or creole), but it could take years to happen.
True, I was actually thinking of that after I posted this and I'm glad you brought it up.

Just raising the fact that Americans don't speak "English" they speak "American English"...

Basically by telling them to learn "English" you're telling them to learn a language you don't usualy speak.

What language is "American" again? I forgot.
There are more American languages than I care to count. None of them are English though. My wife's ancestors on her mother's side spoke Tsalagi. Mine spoke Apache.

From where I sit getting rid of the illegal immigrants means shipping all the white people back to Europe.
No, the poor dears could never stand all the rednecks.. that wouldn't be nice. just make all of them go live in antarctica.

I don't expect visitors to learn the local language. I expect citizens and residents to learn it though.
i assume he is talkin' bout dem illegals

OT: We are probably the most diverse country out there so... yeah it would be nice if more people didn't speak spanish though
Mainly tourists, since illegal immigrants aren't citizens I can't rightly expect them to naturalize. In that case I'm perfectly fine with them being deported... to the moon. I can also forgive exchange students since they're not going to be here a very long time.
