Nerd and proud. Everyone is a little bit nerdy. Everyone has a nerd-like obsession, whether it be music, or video games, or movies, or who knows what.

Yeah, I'm a nerd/geek, but then again most of my friends are so I'm perfectly fine with it. The only problem with it was that, at school, being a nerd meant people assumed I knew everything, so I was bloody asked everything when somebody in class was stuck. I think that's how I ended up coming to resent most of my year at school. Do your own work!

But yeah, being a nerd/geek isn't "bad" in any sort of way, it just means you fit in with a certain group.

I'm so much more than a "geek" or "nerd". Strangers can call me one if they want, but then strangers can call me whatever they like. Close friends should know better than to try to fit me into any box, so I'd prefer them not to refer to me as a geek or a nerd or similar.

I'll say I have geeky/nerdy interests, but I'd not call myself a geek/nerd unless in jest.

According to every coming-of-age movie ever, I can't be classified as any of those things because I like sports.

To them I say, "Pfffff." I am a geek. Specifically of the 'band' variety. I've played in the band much longer than I've liked football and baseball combined.

I play DnD... I think that automatically gets you into the major nerd club. However even before then I was a big, big nerd and I do indeed wear the title with pride. I actually like being a nerd, I think its a fun life style.

Not a nerd, or a geek, and have never been called one. I guess it's because I hung out with the cool kids way before I got into gaming, which is my only nerdy hobby. Had a few friends who were nerds, though I never felt comfortable around them.
We are both of the understanding that you can be both a nerd and a cool kid at the same time right? Unless your idea of a nerd is someone totally lacking in social skills... We're not all like that, we're not all like what you've seen in comedies or really bad movies. Some of us play sports, go out on the town and get drunk, have a fun time with friends while socializing and well getting out of the house.

Only real difference is, we have geeky hobbies, playing DnD, tabletop gaming and other pretty geeky things. That doesn't make us all socially inept.

Claiming that you're proud to be a nerd seems like a pretty weak defense mechanism to me though.
Why? Why is it a week defense to claim your proud of what you are... Should I not be proud? Should I be trying to mend my geekish ways? Thats like saying " Claiming that your proud to be a fan of -insert football team here- is a weak defense mechanism"... Why? How... Doesn't really make sense. Though maybe I'm an idiot or not cool enough to understand it.

I consider myself a "nerd", but only insofar that my hobbies include video games and trading card games (well, MTG). I don't really label myself or others, though. If others want to label me, I let them. Doesn't really impact who I am.

Also, because the Captcha asked for it, what the hell is ESPN? (If you tell me to google it I will eat you)

Its a sports channel that's mostly for PPV live events and stuff I think.

I am what you would call a nerd or geek. I enjoy and have extensive knowledge of nerdy subjects. I would classify myself as a film nerd, video game nerd, Lost nerd, Sopranos nerd, music geek, and comic book nerd. I also have an interest and knowledge of academic subjects like philosophy, psychology, sociology, politics, and history.

It would not bother me to be classified as a nerd because I feel the only instance in which some would feel uncomfortable with the title is in front of girls. If a girl cannot accept my nerdiness then I have no reason to impress her anyway. I'm comfortable with my status as a nerd but I'm not "proud" of it. It's just what category I fit into (as opposed to jock or skater or whatever) but does not define me.

I don't really look like a stereotypical nerd or geek. I don't have glasses, acne, nor am I obese. I dress well and nothing save for hearing me talk about nerdy subjects would lead you to believe I am in fact a nerd.

Hehe, you got a bit hung up on the cool kids thing there. It was ment to be ironical, but I failed on the delivery(it's really fucking late here, cut me some slack). Anyways; every person is unique, sure, whatever, but there's still the general stereotypes that is associated with the words. Though they may not be true for all a lot of them still are.

As for the defence mechanism; nerd/geek is still used as and considered an insult. "Football fan" isn't, so I still consider it to be silly when people start proclaiming about how proud they are to be nerds.

The group i sit with is called the nerd herd so every one that knows me knows im a nerd and i don't care. I don't wear the title proudly but it doesn't bother me. being a Nerd/geek/dork is nothing to be ashamed of but it's nothing to be proud of either. You should be proud of somthing you worked to get and personally i didn't work to get called a nerd. You should be proud if you called greatest intellect in the world but not nerd. To be proud of the steriotype you fit in is kind of moving backwards. We should be trying to get rid of steriotypes.

Indeed, its is equally quite late here and I did jump the gun a little when I replied to you. Realised that it may have been a little out of order on my part but it was a little too late to go back on it.

Being black is still used and certain words are considered an insult too, would saying your proud to be black be an equally weak defense? Basically saying, I am who I am and honestly happy about it. Honestly, is accepting and being complacent or happy with who you are that weak of a defense? Should we really have to defend it? Can't we just enjoy being who we are?

Also, depending on your club, being a football fan can be an insult.

It's like any word that was formally derogatory that has since been reclaimed as a term of endearment within a community: members of that community can say it to one another, but as soon as someone outside that community says it, it returns to its offensive state. You see it all the time really... it's far from unusual.

Nerd, geek, whatever you want to call me I don't really care. I enjoy technology, science, videogames, anime, manga, I play in my schools band, I listen to music obsessively, etc. I'm fine with people calling me a nerd because the people who try to use it as an insult usually don't have the argument to defend themselves from the backlash I give them. In a way there's something nice about being able to call myself a part of some sort of social categorization because I can relate to many others in that way eg./ calling yourself a gamer.

I've always thought that:

Nerd means someone into intellectual things.
Geek means a passionate interest in something.
Dork means someone with no social skills.

So I'm both a nerd and a geek.

Don't think I've heard anyone being called "black" as an insult. If you had talked about the n-word(can't even type it without fearing to get a warning!)it would've been a bit clearer, but I still haven't seen a black person claiming he's proud to be a n*****, apart from these "gangstas", however, they hardly count as they are the very definition of silly.
I think I understand what you mean though, but this seems to be drifting off a bit. My point is still that nerd/geek is an insult. By, for example, agreeing with the provoker and claiming that you're even proud to be one is an act of trying to avoid confrontation both with the bully and yourself. We all use various forms of defense mechanisms, especially to avoid confrontation. I don't think it's unique and weak only when it comes to nerds.
