So, most all my life, ever since I was a wee little thing, I considered myself a Gamer. Since the first time I lifted an Atari controller to blow me up some Space Invaders. And even more-so once I got an actual computer (Commodore 64 an actual computer?!? Hahahahaha!) Took my first step into a Faerie Tale Adventure and never looked back.
But even as a Gamer, owning every console imaginable between my brother and I, there was always something holding me back from becoming all I ever dreamed to be with that title. Lack of skill at certain games like fighters (while all my friends got "Flawless Victory"s all I ever pictured were my 'Flawless Defeat's), lack of money to afford every single title out there (am I the only one to miss out on E.T. on Atari?!?), and of course social stuff like school responsibilities and horniness. Growing older I always felt out of the loop, focusing on brands like Sega, Blizzard, Black Isle and Sir-Tech only to miss out on the going-ons with EA and Lucas Arts. Just too much spread out information jumbled all over the place (which is why I love this site now.) And then of course my dream of working in the gaming industry never happened, so yet again I felt I lost some Gamer status.
And now... single father who's time is split between trying to make money and trying to be there for him. Am I even a Gamer anymore? I try. I do still have some of that desire. But at some point I have to face reality. I will always enjoy my games, what I do get to play. And I will just have to hope that will be enough to keep my self-given title for the rest of my years.
So what has kept you from being all you wish you could be? Do you even consider yourself a Gamer? What is holding you back? Do you even exist?!? Oh my...
Edit: To me, a "gamer" is someone who plays games while a "Gamer" is someone who goes beyond just playing the game and has dedicated at least some part of his life to the medium.
