Yeah. I'm a gamer. Because I play video games.

I play games, therefore I am a gamer. Simple enough.

What we need is a primarily derogatory term for the cult-like followers of the media. Like the Otaku in regards to Anime.

I'm also a gamer because I play video games. However, I suck at racing games but I will dominate you on the majority of others from rts-fps.

If you play video games you're a gamer, that's all that matters, you don't to have obscene amounts of skill or buy every new title on release day to be a gamer.
And it's a good thing that you're managing your real life responsibilities like your son, and putting those things first, that's what's important in life. You can't let games interrupt your life, and from what it seems, your doing a good job managing that.

I'm a gamer I enjoy games. I don't let them get in the way of my studies, and when I have job I won't let them get in the way of my career, and when I have a family I won't let games get in the way of that either (although I don hope I'll be able to share my games with my family). But I'll still continue to enjoy games even if they aren't as big of a part of my life as they once were.
no, No , NO ! Playing games does NOT make you a gamer ! Taking a picture does not make you a photographer , playing an instrument does NOT make you a musician, watching a movie does NOT make you a film critic !

Now that being said, Op is a gamer because he has a passion for gaming. He enjoys it, he reads up upon it , he dedicates time , money and effort on his hobby ( even if he isn't good at some genres ). Just playing games does not make you a gamer, it's much more than that. It's his passion and love for gaming that makes him a gamer. My Mom is NOT a gamer because she plays peggle ( peggle is a gamer and she plays it ) , OP is a gamer because he cares about the medium as a whole.

Do you still love games with a passion?
If you ask me, that's what makes someone a 'gamer', but because that term is vague I prefer to just say gaming enthusiast.

Yes, my play time isn't that big these days, but I am still fascinated with the medium. You don't need to play all the time to love videogames, to be enthralled by the medium, love it's potential, etc etc. I'm a videogame enthusiast, and you seem to be too despite not being able to play all that much.

Seems pretty straightforward.

Still trying to come up with a term. Maybe Gamarse? It has the first three letters of 'game' and another word for ass, which is largely what the more self-righteous and egocentric among us tend to be. But the really cherry here is that it sounds like a butchered pronunciation of gamers.

Real gamers love games.

Notice the lack of the word "video" in that sentance.

Couple of posers around here.

I don't give a damn who you are or how much you game, if you actually bothered to go through the trouble of making an account and post on the escapist forum, you're a gamer.

I'm too young to get a job and am not out of high school yet, I can't afford games and I haven't played every game out there...

Therefore, I am not a real gamer, right? Not by far, in my opinion. I love video games and they are my main and only hobby aside from using the interwebs. I play nothing but video games, hell, even at school.

I play a lot of fighting games, but I always feel like I am holding myself back because I haven't bought a fight stick. I know I should, but they are so expensive...

I haven't played a game in months, but I still watch game reviews and read up on gaming news. I just don't have the time anymore, but I don't think that disqualifies me as a gamer.

I've been playing vid games since I was six now 19. I can tell you I'm not sure if I regret not playing so many hours or not have played at all. I'm happy with the person I am today. My mind is filled with ideas and stuff and I think this will help me as I go into my now 2nd semester of visual arts at my community college.

I think the thing that will always keep me playing games Is that feeling. Its like a drug almost sometimes. You get goosebumps and Its like you just inserted the drug but its invisible. For some people the feeling may be different idk.

I like a good story in a game but another factor is the graphics. In the past year I really started to delve deeper and deeper into graphics and how hardware in the pc makes it possible. I've become obssessed with playing new games and upgrading my pc. Right now I'm tired with the graphics they don't really impress me anymore even crysis 1 on high settings. One day I may quit but 3 or 4 years down the road I'll probably be drawn back in to gaming for a while just to see the improved realism and get lost in games.

Of course you're a Gamer, just now you're a Gamer Dad. That's actually better then being a simple Gamer, because now you can play games with your son. I mean seriously- how many fathers (besides mine, and some I know..) like playing games with their own child? You're going to be playing so many with your son as he gets older plus if you still have a passion for games itself, then you're a Gamer.
He's almost always on my lap while I'm on TF2. Makes it more difficult to play, but he cracks up every time I die. Generally ends up laughing so hard he falls off my lap.

He also loves to watch my roommate play Wii. Has the bruises on his forehead from my roommate's tennis swings to prove it.

I've tried to get him into gaming himself, but he's still young and has no patience at all. The most he's been willing to do is try and dance along with the zombie dancers in The Michael Jackson Experience on Kinect. But even then he's always trying to add his own choreography.

Over-all, I'm not so sure he's going to grow up to be a Gamer like his old man. Maybe one day, but with his demeanor now I only see the casual fragging in his future. Just something to waste a little time while it's raining outside. Guess we will see...

I've been playing vidya gaems for many, many years, I still do, I follow the culture and the effects of them on the world. I believe I've transcended the boundaries of what it means to be a gamer. Some would call me a hero. Some would call me a martyr.

Most would call me a nutter.

There is some logic to this statement, though I personally just followe Yahtzee here because I thought he was funny and my favorite person/ thing on this site is Movie Bob which doesn't always have anything at all to do with gaming. This site is about all mediums of escaping reality. It just happens to focus on gaming, and usually it's even more focused with video gaming.

OT: I consider myself a real gamer because im extreamly dedicated to my gaming and I enjoy doing it more then anything and I love to play it in all forms weather it be console handheld or PC game like Total Annihlation.

Iv spent more money on games then anything else and iv had prob killed myself without it due to lack of anything for me.

I started gaming on an Amstrad 6128.

I've played a hell of a lot of games between then and now, and I still don't consider myself a gamer.

Mostly because I wouldn't pay 10 cents for the "culture" that surrounds gaming.

Picked up an Atari 2600 control stick in 1985 and today the only thing thats changed is the controller.

I still game. I have a family of my own now and i'm not doing the job I thought I would be (always envisioned myself owning a pub by the time I was 30 .... it failed, pubs keep shutting down around here now it would be a waste of money to buy in). But I still game.

12 years in the British army and I was still gaming (hey, we have time off you know, we even have music and television ... thats for those of you that thought us soldiers won't know who Drowning Pool are).

All thats changed between 1985 and today are the games (apart from those Indie games that look exactly like games did in 1985) and what I play those games on.
