The clock is ticking closer and closer to 1am, I have to work tomorrow, my alarm set for 6am. If I went to sleep now I could get 5 hours of sleep. As it is, I'm laying in bed being kept awake by my neigbour's dog barking. The dog has been barking non stop for nearly an hour now. I've knocked on my neigbour's door and kindly requested that they make their beloved animal shut up. I was blessed with almost 5 minutes of silence before it started barking again. So here I am, wide awake, extremely pissed off with no chance of sleep anytime soon.

So my question is this, Escapist: What keeps you awake at night?

My mind is the only thing that keeps me awake at night. I have a very active mind and thoughts rush by way too fast.

Working on fixing it though, slowly but surely, I'm getting more and more (and better) sleep each night.

I love sleeping while it's raining the soft pitter patter of rain falling upon the roof except for one little drop of water that drains from the gutter and gracefully falls into a puddle bellow again...and again...and again and oh god my brain!

My restless mind.
My brother knocking on my door to tell me shit I don't care about.
A really good book.
An awesome LP.

Knock again. Threaten to kill his dog.

At least that's what I'd do.

OT: I can sleep. I just don't want to.
I have a feeling that threatening to kill their pet would get me in more trouble than it's worth.

I generally can't sleep because I think too much. Drives me insane then I just stay up for like 6 hours more then pass out for about 10 hours.

But for your conundrum, have you tried yelling? Now it's not a first choice mind you, but you already asked politely, now you need to TELL them that they're going to shut the dog up or you will. It doesn't have to be an honest threat, just make it angry enough and that dog will be so silent you can hear a pin drop.

My laptop. Seriously, do you know how comfortable it is to be able to use the internet. IN BED?!

Shoot the dog.

or you could just try and sneak up to it and choke it silent.

... of course I'm kidding, dont do that, thats crazy.

I dont know, Iw ouldnt even really bother trying to sleep. I'd just go about my day as I would five hours earlier and get some energy drinks or something.

OT: I dont know, Mostly my mind with its constant wandering.

I haven't tried yelling, but I think I'm going to be a bit more forceful with my next request of silence.

Finally a place to complain about the one thing that gets on my bloody nerves, I have to sleep in the country side and its too quite. Seriously it can be quite for about 20 minutes then out of nowhere a dog could bark or you here a tree rustling in the wind. Keeps me awake until at least 2:30 in the morning. There needs to be constant sound for me to sleep soundly. Thats why I prefer the city such as London.

Well, by the timestamp on your post and the time you're quickly approaching, you're on Greenwich time, so I assume shooting anything is out of the question... personally, I use a combination of beer and valerian root extract when I absolutely need to sleep through anything... but you need to plan ahead for that sort of thing.

My advice: keep trying to sleep, no doubt your neighbor has done what he can short of muzzling the dog to shut it up. Dogs that are kept inside are like that (I could never have a dog if I lived in an apartment... that's practically abject cruelty right there). You'll probably go to work tired, but missing one night of sleep never killed anyone... at least not directly. Tomorrow, get yourself some sleep aids.

To much to do, not enough hours in the day. I'm a hyperactive workaholic and by god i've always got something I need to be doing. This leads to me going days where I only get 3-4 hours sleep.

Even now i'm riding a stationary bike and watching ESPN as I type this.

If I sleep in, I can't get to sleep the next night and I have to become sleep-deprived in some way to reset the vicious cycle (a small amount of sleep or an all-nighter).

If I have anything thats stressing me out or if I had a fight with a friend or my gf, then Ill think about that for awhile, not being able to sleep. Thats usually the only thing stopping me from getting my good night of sleep.

Other than that, occasionally I'll just be hyper-aware of everything around me for some reason, likely from stress as well etc that makes everything going on in my apartment more and more audible to me at that moment- some people have suggested that my apartment is haunted, but that couldn't be possible since ghosts, demons and spirits are pseudo-scientific bullshit.

In any case, if I'm having trouble sleeping I just read something really boring like a large textbook on a subject I have no interest in, or if really bad possibly take some l-theanine.

I keep me awake at night. Well, myself and the Internet, of course. Yup, that's how I lose the most sleep: not being able to press that shut down button...

...But really, stress is usually what keeps me awake, and I alleviate that by diverting my mind. Go pick up a book and read for a while. Don't watch TV or play video games, those will just make you more awake. Reading is the best thing to do to get yourself ready to sleep.
