How about... Fallout New Vegas.
He said specifically no FPS games.
Last time I checked New Vegas was an FPS game.
Scroll out and you're good to go.

Last time I checked it's an RPG in which you can use guns but also exclusively thrown weapons, melee weapons and unarmed and have the option of both first person and third person views.
I am aware of that, but the game, for most people, is much better if played in first person for most of the time.

And the fact that you can do other things than shoot doesn't change the fact that it is normally going to be in first person, even if you can use other weapons.
So it's in first person (which is optional)... So is Portal, Mirrors Edge and Oblivion (the game it's supposed to be so similar to).

I'll be honest, I haven't gotten around to playing New Vegas yet, but I did play fallout 3 pretty heavily, and I've watched my girlfriend play New Vegas, and I have to say that calling that game an FPS is a large mistake: You have entirely missed the point... congratulations!
If you're saying because I'm not calling it an RPG as well, well that is just stupid.
Being an RPG doesn't change the fact that it is also an FPS.
It is really an FPS/RPG hybrid, but the fact that it is in first person (Most of the time) and you shoot/throw/attack stuff kind of makes it a first person shooter. You've completely missed the point of the OP's thread...congratulations!

And if it is because of being able to play in third person, I've already addressed that.

Now you're just being pedantic.
Yes, you can use other stuff, but it is still so much in vein with FPS's that it is kind of pointless.
The difference between throwing stuff, shooting stuff, and hitting stuff in first person isn't THAT big, and sure, New Vegas is a pretty good game, but that is, if I'm right from what the OP said, is specifically NOT what he wanted.

Mirror's Edge has nothing to do with this because it is a platformer. Same with Portal, and if I was being really pedantic, I'd say that it is an FPS because you use a gun, but that is just arguing for the sake of arguing.

Well yeah I'm being pedantic. I'm just saying if he likes shooting stuff in third person (as you suggested with RDR, ME2 and DS2) then he can do that in New Vegas too therefore my suggestion is just as valid as yours. Unless the weapon has a scope, every time you "aim down your sights" in it, it does the thing all TPS's do which is hovers closer to your shoulder.

Also I don't know of any FPS that has a crucial game element where you stop time and automatically aim at a specific part of your enemy.

It's an RPG far more than it is an FPS. That's the entire basis of Fallout as a franchise.

edit: also, from your other comment, you say that "most of the time" it's in first person. That's rubbish, it is in 1st or 3rd person whenever you want it to be either, unless you're in dialogue. Excluding dialogue I could play through the entire game in 3rd person if I wanted.

Wow @ stupid debate around Fallout...
YES it's in first person and YES you shoot at things, but it doesn't play at all like an FPS. Saying New Vegas plays the same way as Killzone or CoD is ridiculous. It's a first-person RPG. Everything is determined through you stats, not your playing skills.

I prefer the first person view a thousand times more, as well. Only use third person to check what apparel I got on.

Yet I really wouldn't call it a pure FPS. Rather an RPG, that you can play in first person. Plus there's the much-of-shooting-involved, but you might as well be having role-playing conversations with people and wonder why you can't sleep in a bed because it's owned by an unplayable character you just killed, for hours.

But these things are a bit subjective, and unnecessary generalizations[footnote]Which I generally dislike with a passion fruit.[/footnote] are unnecessary and potentially misleading. Modern games (as well as movies and music) tend to have plenty of different aspects and content, that you can well divide to different genres. After all, genres are there only to give some hint about the type and content of the game, so you don't need to wonder if Plants vs. Zombies and Amnesia: Dark Descent are very similar games, or so very different.

If you're looking for just a game you can get into quick enough and have enough of an emotional attachment to last for a rental, I would suggest either Just Cause 2, Prototype or Assassin's Creed 2 (Not Brotherhood- only because it begins right where AC2 ends.) All three of those games you can pretty much figure out whether you're gonna love it or hate it within two hours of playing. Further, all of those games pretty much give you nearly all the toys you need right from the get-go. Granted, there are powerups, etc. but there is next to none NEEDED grinding. One caveat though- AC2 has a storyline that might prompt you to rent two or three times to complete.

I would also suggest Dead Rising 2 but part of the joy or that game is repeat plays and geting up into the higher levels so you can do fun things like headslam zombies into walls, etc.

And, of course, if you have a good long time to kill and have a taste for the crazy insane and not too hung on graphics, I suggest Deadly Premonition. It WILL change your life.

I agree with you.
I'd classify Fallout as an RPG/FPS hybrid, but considering that it is still an FPS, I kind of assumed that the OP wouldn't want it.
A much more specific term, I suppose, would be an RPG with heavy FPS elements.

I do agree with those additions as well. Oh, right, the OP's preferences... As soon as something formed, that one could describe as an interesting conversation even; I forgot all about what the thread was all about.
