If you don't have one at the moment for the purposes of this thread just assume that you do. Anyway you somehow discover that your significant other isn't human. They are in fact, an android. They look exactly like a human down to the smallest detail. On top of this your significant other doesn't know that they are an android. They think they are human. What do you do now? Would this information cause you to break up with them? Do you tell them that they're an android? Would they even believe you?

I'll put what I'd do in this spoiler.
I would stay with them. But when it comes to telling them I'm not certain. I probably would tell them. But that doesn't mean they would believe me. I mean would you believe someone who told you that you were an android?

I would stay with her, but I probably wouldn't tell her. No point really if there is no way to prove it. When we realize she can't have babies we could always just adopt.

Eh, it would be weird when your partner doesn't get any older. I imagine they'd figure it out on their own.

I don't think it'd be grounds for a break up in and of itself, but what a weird question.

So that's why her head exploded that one time I told her about a paradox I just read...

Is trying to reprogram them an option?

I'd have to tell her. It's just too much of an important question of humanity and the nature of what makes us beings to keep under your hat.

That being said, assuming she doesn't blue screen, It's time to install bigger breasts!

Oddly enough I'd be perfectly fine with living with an android if it had perfect AI. Too much time watching Star Trek and questioning the nature of consciousness I guess.

You can try. That isn't to say it would work. Might kill them. And they probably wouldn't agree to it.
Well, androids don't have rights as far as I'm aware so time to install a tapdancing program!

I would install Gentoo on her, and also make sure that she thought about distributed computing whilst she was asleep. Then I'd probably install an Apache server on her and setup my own website.

In all seriousness, I'd probably prefer a thinking robot to a human. Especially when it comes to intelligence.

This depends. If they were an android, they were made for a specific purpose. I mean, they weren't biologically given "life." Therefore, either another human and/or an intelligence (the greys, reptoids, Sleestaks, whatever) capable of creating a life-like representation of a human built said android. So it boils down to: why do they exist? Does this android exist simply to imitate humans? Are they programmed to go all Skynet on humanity?

If I'm able to figure out if they're there for reasons not detrimental for my own existence, then yeah, sure. I'll stay by their side. However, if I find out they're Armageddotron 5000, then yeah- I'm packing my bags and/or calling up my local action hero team to do their thing.

There's a great short story about this, I think it's called something like "Helen O'Loy" (a play on Alloy and Helen of Troy), and it's about a man who marries his android housekeeper.

The main character and his best friend either build or order an android maid, they realize she's a lot more lifelike than either of them had bargained for, main character and android fall in love, then get married. Best friend and android conspire to make her age along with her husband using makeup. Main character dies of old age, having almost completely forgotten his wife wasn't human. Shortly after he dies, she's deactivated -- either suicide, or after asking the friend to do it for her.

It's been a long ass time since I read it, so sorry that I'm fuzzy on the details.

OT: Assuming this is a sentient being and we were both in love, why not? Anyone ever watch Blade Runner? Deckard didn't care, and it's only in the Director's cut that we have any reason to suspect he suspects that he might not be human himself. I'd probably do what Deckard did.

Why would I break up with them? I'd probably want to tell them, but why is them being a robot cause to end the relationship?

Oh, kids I guess, but that could be fixed with adoption.

I'd keep her off watching Electroma though, for obvious reasons.

"What labels me, negates me."
If they can fuck you and love you that's all you really need.
Can't have children? Good for us. Doesn't matter for me since I'm gay anyways but for anyone else it's fine. Androids, transsexuals, and infertile wo/men can easily be compensated for by adoptions, which also usually lead to happier relationships due to them not being unexpected/unplanned for.

Shock horror, humans are robots. So in short, I really wouldn't care and would explain to her why she shouldn't care either.

I sorta lack a significant other so in this case I am going to substitute the person I wish was my significant other. it would be pretty ironic since my friends always joke that I am a robot on account of me being very serious, mostly emotionless, and very knowledgable on lots of subjects, and borderline obsessive with logic. I even got a nickname (unit-128075). From a personal standpoint, I would collect evidence that she was a androind (or gyndroid since andr come from the root word for man) and prsent it to her. Then I would probably encourage her to go to a university and submit herself to experminetation, afterall this is a major scientific breaktthrough. Yeah... mabey stuff like that is why people think I am a robot... and why I don't have a girlfriend... Oh well.

Since me and my significant others usually criticize humanity's faults together, I'd probably get her to install internet connection. Criticizing stuff would be much easier that way.
