Jesus Christ. I hate those people who think that if you don't have a social network page you don't exist. Well you know what? Fuck 'em, the stupid pricks! Remember that everything that happened up to now was done without social networking and most of everything that has happened up until now was done without the internet.

Dumb fucks ...

Not necessarily. If they're used to the extreme that these kids apparently are (didn't read the article, just got the gist from the OP) then yes, definitely need some sort of life outside of Facebook.

But in my case, I moved to New York from Louisiana not knowing anyone here (even a year later I only know maybe 20 people around here). I despise talking on the phone (I rarely even talk to my girlfriend on the phone for more than 5 minutes) and I go crazy if my phone goes off constantly from text messages. For me social networking is just the easiest way to keep up with people that I care about back home.

Depends what you're using them for, but yes for the most part they are.
So, someone has no life for spending a couple of hours on a video game. However people that spend every moment during work or school and their leisure time on social networks do in fact have a life.
You have no life if you consistently put overwhelming amounts of time into any activity regardless of what that is. If you spend every moment of your life partying you also have no life as without that one activity you would have nothing left.
There was an article I'd read a while ago about people who became anxious and often paranoid if they were unable to communicate with friends through some form (e.g Facebook, SMS, etc) for more than a couple of hours. Those people need to be forced into nature and nothing but physical communication for a few months.

Really, we are discussing random teenage ramblings now...

I propose we steer this topic towards something constructive: Anyone got good bacon recipes they would like to share?

Also let me leave you a quote from this article: "There's more 'life' happening online than offline. If you are not online, you are completely out of the loop--you don't have a life, you don't really exist."
They don't get it, not because they're young but because they don't get it. Subtly, they've convinced themselves that without the latest thing, they equal zero. So in that regard, they're perfectly normal, socially-focused people.

Now, that doesn't mean they're dumb or smart, it means they're going with a crowd ideal and made it part of their life and it couldn't possibly meaningless, could it? *Cough* Do not question the crowd, everyone's doing it, be popular.

This is probably why I have never had any interest in social networking. Although I do have a Twitter account. I've never used it, but I have one. Do I count as existing then?

Not really a recipe but a great Valentines Day idea:

OT:
I always feel like my brain cells are screaming to be put out of their misery on social networking sites. Probably because there are too many people like them on there and it isn't limited to tweens.

It is a travesty, but understand. They're young teens, no one should care what they think. Why do you think no one outside their age group thinks Justin Bieber is awesome? I know that I was completely ignorant at that age. It's only a matter of time before most of them grow out of this "phase". Some won't, some will continue to be airheads and there's nothing we can do about that. I do have a Facebook, but I rarely post. For teens, it exists simply to post photos of themselves in the mirror and lol at what they had for dinner.

I don,t give a flying fuck about social networks.
the only reason I have a twitter account is because my friends pressed me into getting one.
Institute family meals with tech breaks. Current psychological literature recommends that families sit down and share at least 3 or 4 meals together a week. Keep them short--under 45 minutes--and tech free for the most part. Give everyone a two-minute warning to check whatever device beforehand. After 15 minutes, allow a one minute message or text check. Aim to expand the tech free time as your kids become more focused.
what the crap? people can,t even stay away from their internet FOR ONE HOUR?!
I,m addicted to the internet but I can easily focus on something non-internet related for longer then that!

Only reason I got a Facebook account was to keep in touch with people after I went out of state to go to college. I really don't understand the obsession. It's just a way to talk to people. Thought we had phones, language, and voices to do that.

You realize that social networking has become integral to the modern social experience right? It may be harsh, but it's like not having a cell phone was when I was in high school, you're difficult to get a hold of and constantly out of the social loop.

I can get behind that, but only if someone devises other criteria by which I can consider 90% of the young teen population on this planet, non-existant.

Teeheehee. Well, when all those little Facebook drones fail miserably at their education and then go on to update their profile pages from their cozy refridgerator box down the alley (anything else being out of their price range, seeing how noone will hire them), I'll take a moment to reflect on my lack of existence as I earn money and build a stable life for myself.
Added bonus: As a teacher I get to confiscate the little tykes' smartphones if they keep typing away during class.
