Ok, so here's the setup:

You're walking down a sidewalk a bit after sunset when you step on something that makes you stumble a bit. You look to see what it is and find that it's $2,000 local in cash. The wad is made up of mostly large bills, but there are some smaller ones in there. It's bound with a regular rubber band, and there isn't anyone nearby who could have possibly dropped it, and besides, judging by the dirt on it, it's been on the ground for a bit.

What do you do with it?

Now me, first thing I'd do is give it to my boyfriend so that bills, rent, and food can be paid for. Granted that there's any left, and if he'd allow it, I'd use some of it to buy a Kaidan hoodie [http://biowarestore.com/apparel/kaidan-armour-stripe-hoody.html] and set aside some for a 3DS and Pokemon X/Y. The rest, try to save it for another time.

Now Escapists, what about you?

EDIT: Made it more clear that the $2,000 you find is in the local currency. Hopefully, that converts over to a nice chunk of change for all countries.

Because I can't be bothered to work out the exchange rate (and I want more monies), I'm going to assume that was £2000. I'd probably just spend it on my activities over the Summer- Going to Download and Shambala festivals, going to Amsterdam, and that kinda stuff. Given that most of that's already paid for, I'd say that leaves me with ~£1200, so, new bass?

Yuss.
So I'd have about £250 left that I'd probably just spend on drink or gigs or clothes or whatever.

Put it in the bank while I decide what to do with it.

I'd probably end up spending it on a new laptop I want to get.

A Hermit's Cave
Probably a new PC...

But that won't use it up, so I'd chuck the rest of it in my savings account... -_-

Yeah, I'm boring like that...

New pc, since mine suddenly decided it had had enough and quietly slipped into silicon heaven along with all the calculators. Save the rest for car insurance.

There is a trip I'm going on as soon as my finances allow for it. That money would send me to San Fransisco pronto.

Knowing me? Probably put it into the bank and leave it there. The bigger my bank account is, the happier I am. Bills are a bit tight right now as I'm the only one with an income, but it would probably just be put into the bank and left alone. ... I'm kinda sad that way. Even if I do want to retire young.

Take it to the nearest police station. If no-one comes to collect it it becomes mine after a time limit I think. Then I'd just stick it in an ISA until I need it.

Hmmm... well first thing i would do is try and clean off the dirt (at home)... deposit it in my bank, cancel my train ticket to LA and fly there! Stay longer than 5 days. then come home and get back to life. (Pay bills, rent, etc). $2000 bucks doesn't last long in this day and age.

edit; and possibly a new pc.

That's what I'd do. Times are tough right now. If I took it and spent it, I'd feel pretty guilty knowing that I might have caused some poor bastard to be late with his rent or unable to feed his kids. If I brought it to the police and it isn't claimed, at least then I'd have the peace of mind in knowing that I tried to do right by the person who lost it.

Assuming it isn't claimed and I get to keep it, I'd probably save it. There's not much I really want right now, and I don't have any debt to pay off at the moment... so... yeah. It doesn't hurt to have a spare $2000 set aside as a rainy day fund or an emergency fund.

Pick it up, wait at the area for an hour or so and check if anyone comes searching for the money. If they do I'd probably give it back. Going to a police station with it would be better, but I don't trust the police with money.
So, assuming I take it for myself I'd first of all get it converted the real money(;)), then I'd use it for my driver's license.

Seems like the USD has dropped significantly since the last time I checked. $2000 converts to 13,000SEK(or £1300). I'm still used to just multiplying it with 10... Should start buying games from the US.

Take it to the police. Most police departments have a claim policy whereas if the money/item isn't claimed after a certain amount of time, it is yours. You never know what that $2000 could have been for, rent, medical bills, etc. It's not mine and I would feel hella guilty if I just pocketed it.

I'd probably wait around a bit to see if anyone would come by looking to claim it. If no one bites, I'd treat my friends to a very expensive dinner because they should profit from my good luck as well.

Pretty much this. If it's been around for a while, odds are it probably won't be picked up, and I can then claim it in good conscience.
