I'm looking to build a gaming computer and have relatively little knowlage in the way of computer parts. SO, I have a budget of around 1200 USD, a little over is fine, if you have the time and are so inclined, post a build!

I have $1200?

*runs away cackling*

Sorry, had to do it. On-topic, I'll be watching this thread because I'm a little curious about what I can get for that kind of money, too. I know custom rigs are generally more powerful than the prebuilt models.

I could help out with a build.

First a few questions.
1. Any brand preferences?
2. Do you already have a display?
3. Any unique features you want? 3D? Eyefinity? Cuda? SSD?

YAY! My favorite thing!

Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $69.95

Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS 2TB 5900 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive - $99.99

GIGABYTE GA-880GA-UD3H AM3 AMD 880G SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - $109.99

ASUS GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 768MB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI - $169.99

CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W Power Supply - $139.99

CORSAIR DOMINATOR-GT 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 - $249.99

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 Quad-Core Processor - $155.99

Total - $935.89 (Newegg.com)

Dual GPU Total ~ $1100.00

There you go, the latest and greatest AMD board and processor, with 8 Gbs of DDR 3, 2 Tb of HDD space, and a cheap-but-speedy GTX 460 that you can SLI with a second GTX, if you want.

Now, I know you wanted to do an i7 core build, but AMD is better for games, due to the way they manage their on-core RAM cache and Bus speeds.

I agree with this guy.

Chances are if you need help selecting parts you shouldn't be putting it together.

Is that including peripherals, like a screen, keyboard, and mouse?

I mean, I really can't help you, but I figured it would be important for everyone who can, because combined they can take away at least $200 from your budget.

Thanks so much, you guys are so helpful!

On a less sarcastic note, I'll have someone helping my actually physically put it together who knows that they are doing. I just need to figure out what parts I want to put into this thing.

Er, have you even taken a gander up at my list?

Anyway, the operating system isn't on there, but that's an easy one. Windows 7.

That looks good. I was actually thinking of doing something similar to that except with 4 GB ram and an i5 instead of AMD processor. I've heard conflicting things about AMD and Intel processors. Say intel is always better then AMD in that price range, and some say AMD is better for gaming. I don't know what to believe.

How about a C64 with gold trimmings adding up the the value of 1200 USD?

I'd be fine with that, dunno about you.
