Tag along, hoping I can stand at the back of the party dishing out damage without doing too much of the work myself, and making sure to hoover up the good bits of loot before anyone else does.

I tell him I have better things to do than go on a grand adventure helping to save a country and its citizens, then I go home and play Skyrim.
Eh, beats real life at any rate. And besides, if I die, no biggie. I'll just need to tell my family about it and not give them a specific time for being back. And hopefully, more "normal people" I'll be able to stay in touch with so I don't go insane afterwards, assuming I survive.

Depends on the adventurer and what the rules are for companion characters in that particular adventurer's game. If it was, say, the Courier from Fallout: New Vegas (where companions can only be knocked unconscious), I'd totally come with them. I probably wouldn't be much use besides moral support and philosophical guidance, but I'd do my best. I guess I could also get a gun and half-heartedly shoot at enemies, but I've never shot anything bigger than a BB gun, so I don't know how well that would go. I'd actually make an effort to avoid the Courier's line of fire, though, so in that regard I know I'd be heads-and-shoulders above all the other companions.
Unless I get magic powers and a boat load of money out of the deal, probably tell them to go find some other clueless loser.
