0, I always read new messages because that means I may have been quoted, and my ego needs to be quoted constantly, it validates me as a person and... dear god I am a sad individual.

Don't worry, everyone gets that slight morale boost when they see that their contribution to a topic mattered to someone.

Zero. Perhaps you need to turn off your User Group notifications, my friend.

I love getting new messages. Then I was invited to a group and started to resent them. Then I turned off those notifications and now I just get messages when someone talks to me (they love me!) or when I am quoted (they paid attention to me!). I enjoy both cases more than I should.
