The movie focuses on a small group of survivors who have learned about the zombie outbreak from the news well beforehand, and barricaded themselves in a small hardware store in preparation for the inevitable arrival of a massive zombie army.
The twist: The protagonist, a member of this group, has already been infected by the zombie virus - and is trying to hide this fact from his companions because he knows they'll kill him if they find out. This task becomes increasingly difficult as his mental functions gradually deteriorate, his skin slowly starts rotting, and his starving stomach screams in agony for just ONE tasty little brain...

The zombies are a distraction/trial run for an invasion by aliens that don't suck.
Or...a bunch of annoying teens are at high school in the US, when a zombie outbreak occurs, only the zombies are in Africa and so they don't care. Only, then the media gets bored with saying that CERN is going to kill us all, and for two weeks they pretend zombies will kill them all. Everyone at the high school panics and the token black character is murdered cause he's, like, African and so he must be zombie (if the token black character is a sassy black chick, then she's murder for being, like, half-African, cause we can't have black women who are too black).
Then the media says it's hedgehog flu that will kill everyone, and they all forget about zombies and start being afraid of hedgehogs.
Also, there's gratuitious sex for no reason, I guess.

there is a viral outbreak and a group of survivors team up against the ravenous undead...same old same old. they fight through malls, streets, and escape into the forest...where they die of a bacterial plague that was the actual viral outbreak; the zombies were entirely unrelated voodoo monsters.
The team of survivors all make it to the nearby place of safeness and then when they lock themselves in, they turn around to see a huge army of zombies

Also, Darth Vader is there, and he has a bowler hat which he throws at zombies during the final epic battle of earth. Also, the vampires are all gay and sparkle and daylight, so the zombies aren't actually dead or anything, they just become highly intelligent and immortal and more athletic and so on. And Sebulba wins the pod race.

To expound, pull a Shyamalan and have the "immune/survivors" actually be the ones carrying the disease which results in heightened aggression due to extreme paranoia towards non-infected whom they see as the "zombies" as well as short term memory loss (anything older than a week is lost). Increase the rate of spread by having the virus able to transmit through saliva and through the skint. You can even have one of the protagonists with a picture of a (uninfected) loved one whom they are supposed to seek out ala Memento which causes them to butt heads with the uninfected and those protecting them.
It has probably already been done however, considering how often film makers have gone to the Zombie Feed Trough.
The zombies start to evolve and assimilate. Creating a central nervous system and an advanced highly intelligent civilization. They keep humans alive, offer them the benefits of their science, but expect everyone above the age of 70 to be zombified to sustain the species. Due to the science created by the zombies 70 is the new 30 and humans start to revolt. A group of a million humans get into bunkers and release a deadly virus upon the rest of mankind, killing them and thus the zombies.After 200 years underground, everyone intelligent above ground is dead. The bunkers open and the humans start to rebuild. It ends with a shot of a positive virus test, meaning that the human race is doomed.
