...when you haven't played a game in ages, go back to it.......and you don't remember anything?

What you were doing, what you were supposed to be doing, who people are, or even how to play?

I'm having one of those right now. It freaking sucks. And you feel like such an idiot.

Doubly bad since its the Witcher 2, which is already complicated and an RPG, and now I don't know what to do.

Gaaah....

Ugh, yes. I hadn't played KOTOR in a year, and when I came back to it I died several times before getting the hang of it again.
Oddly, some games I never can seem to forgot how to play well, for instance Portal.

I've done this with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 7. Two great RPGs, but I tend to take long breaks from games like that. It doesn't help that there's no mission menu to remind me what I'm supposed to do.

I've recently had to restart Deus ex HR because I completely forgot where I was up to.

Now I'm thinking of restarting again, because I'm honestly not sure if I've killed someone and I don't think I can check :/

I usually replay the whole game by that point considering I need to learn the combat, gameplay, and controls again from scratch anyways.

I don't forget how to play, but what I was doing/where I was in the story.
And yes, it sucks, especially if you're quite far along in the story.

I've never had that, actually. I can name you characters and controls for every game I can currently remember playing that had anything to learn.

I think I should have had this when I went back to L4D for the first time in a least a year, probably more. For some reason all the old tricks and camping spots were still fresh in my mind... Weird

I have this with Skyrim because there are so many sidequests that I honestly don't care about...

I'm sure i'll never touch that game again unless this Dawnguard thing goes on sale and is actually really good.

I'm usually good at instantly knowing where I left off, at least in games I somewhat like or care about. I couldn't tell you where I am in The Witcher 2 for example, except that the Grimdark level is still off the charts but I could go and load one of my old Persona 4 saves and resume as normal.

I would usually just start a new game though if the timespan has been that long. I just love the startgame that much

I feel like that when I play DOTA 2 virtually every time. Normally it's ok because you just need to kill the bad guys and stay alive, but when you have watch the timing of the map and gauge the range of the spell and measure the enemies cooldowns and monitor the rune spots and block the guy who's escaping, all while trying to garner knowledge from your team's incessant whining and complaiing, all sense of formal training goes out the window.

And that's when I was playing Sven. Don't even get me started on one of the hard guys like Enigma or Visage.

Yeah happened with me and the secret of mana I remember I got right to the end got lost and switched it off two years later (approx) I switched it back on to try and complete it I found my way but could not remember the controls or spells or anything so the first enemy casts a death spell on my team and I die while I am unable to even hit it so I turned it off again.

I think the same will happen with chrono trigger I haventy touched that in over 2 years now as I got bored so im pretty sure if I go back it will have to be a new run through.

First time I finished Fallout 3, I think it was after about my fifth start... *snrk*

Pretty much the same with all the Elder Scrolls games I've played. I am he of 10ms attention span, though RPG's are still fun... KotOR, I'll pick up and gleefully play 12hrs in a sitting it's that good (or rather, I love it that much).

A couple times on TW games (since I flit back and forth between titles), I restart a campaign purely because I can't remember what my strategy at the time was (usually with the various mods of R:TW).
