You know what "classic movie" I can't comprehend the popularity of?

Forrest Gump.
I frankly do not understand the appeal of this movie, to me it seems to be advertising that if you blindly follow your life views you will end up being a successful person in life.
I also do not understand the popularity of Forrest, personally I feel it is one of Tom Hank's weaker roles and the voice he uses to portray the character does not - in my opinion - serve the purpose it originally intended rather it just serves to irritate.

I'd say his voice goes well with the character, Forrest is a simpleton isn't he? You don't have to like it but you should because it's awesome. You can do anything you want to if you put the effort in.

It's not a very good movie.

It's loaded with Americana and sticky sweet sentimentality though, so it had a fairly broad appeal. It winning Best Picture over the more influential and experimental Pulp Fiction is one of many reasons why it's hard to take the Academy Awards seriously.

It's a decent movie. Definitely overrated, though. I feel the same way about The Godfather. That's right, I said it. The Godfather is overrated. It is a good story, but the movie is way too long. For example, what was the point of having Michael go to Italy and get married?

But back on topic, I wouldn't say Forrest Gump is a bad movie. But it's not the best movie to come out that year.

I agree that Forrest Gump is overrated but Pulp Fiction did not deserve to win over it, it's a good movie too with great performances but it stinks of Tarantino's 'style over substance' all the way through. I'm not saying Forrest Gump was the most thought provoking piece ever but neither was Pulp Fiction.

I think the fact that Kubrick never won an award is a tragedy. Gump was great the first time I saw it but It plays like clockwork on TV so I wouldn't watch it anymore, even if Tom Hanks does a great performance.

This. (Kahunaburger thinks Pulp Fiction should have got the Oscar that year? What madness is this.)

I expected a thread about CItizen Kane or the The Godfather. I am pleasantly surprised.

Anywho, A lot of people loathe Forest Gump. It is really cliche and simplistic in terms of story. In my opinon, Forest Gump is a solid movie but it is overrated.

I don't understand the popularity of Forrest Gump, The Godfather, OR Citizen Kane.

I enjoyed The Godfather, I just think it's overrated. (Although have you read the book? Good Lord. 40% of it is about Sonny's enormous dong, another 30% is about this random girl who doesn't like sex because her vagina is too big. I'm not kidding. Given the quality of the film, I thought I was going to read a classic, a real book for the ages. How anyone made that movie, overrated or not, from such subpar material is beyond me.)

Wow... didn't realize there was this much hate for FG on the internet. To me, its just a simple story about a sweet Southern boy who despite a great disadvantage sticks to his ideals and tries hard and goes on all sorts of adventures. Pure, awesome Americana all the way. I love it.

I thought Forrest Gump was a fun, entertaining, and engaging movie. That's all I really look for in any film.

It's also an all around great looking flick. Too bad Robert Zemeckis doesn't do live-action anymore.

I prefer Tom hanks in "The Green Mile".

Forrest Gump was fairly good though, it tells a pretty good story :3

I haven't seen Forrest Gump in a long time, but I remembered it being a cute movie. That and it got a Weird Al parody.

But back on topic, I wouldn't say Forrest Gump is a bad movie. But it's not the best movie to come out that year.
Three main reasons:
1. The small wedding CEREMONY in Italy is meant to contrast with the big wedding RECEPTION in America, basically calling the american lifestyle materialistic.

2. It adds more tragedy to Michael's character. He tries to settle down, but his past follows him all the way to Italy. It's really the event that makes him such a hardass.

3. This might just be me, but I thought he was a complete scumbag when he showed up back in America and gets back together with his old sweetheart without mentioning what happened to his ex-wife. It makes it seems like he wants companionship, no matter how many of his companions have to die for him to get it.

OT: Forrest Gump was fine. A movie made great by Tom Hanks performance, and the academy loves those kind of movies. Pulp Fiction was almost certainly more important, so it losing best picture is going to seem more and more ridiculous the more time passes. (I personally liked the Whole Bloody Affair cut of Kill Bill better, but all the serious Tarantino fans yell at me when I say that.)

The Godfather and citizen Kane where films that did new and fresh things with the media of film in their day. Themes and tropes that where new then have been improved now.

As for Forest Gump (wich too is almost 20 years old)I wasn't aware that it's considered a "great movie". It is one of my friends favorite film, but I didn't thing too much of it. It wasn't bad and made me laugh a few times, but not much more than that. Maybe I'll give it a rewatch some day.

ITT: Circle jerk about disliking popular movies. Yep, so cool and edgy.
Actually, people are just expressing their opinions about what they did or did not like about particular films, which is a perfectly valid form of expression. Yours is the closest thing approaching a snide, "cool and edgy" post in here.

As for Gump, it's nice that you liked it, but this is a seriously weird thing to get so defensive about.

Avatar and Psycho, for me.

Avatar was just "Blue Pocahontas in Space" in my eyes. It didn't do anything special outside of visuals. And, let's be honest, here. "Unobtainium"?

Psycho was... Well, whatever. When I read the results of some poll where people said it was the #1 scariest movie of all time, I was just all "WHAT THE HECK!? I saw that film, and "horror" did not cross my mind for one second! That film is not scary at all!"

Not to mention, stuff like The Hangover and American Pie. Seriously, what the heck!? I'll just stick with Inception and The Avengers, thank you very much. Oh, wait... I almost forgot. Twilight and The Hunger Games. Twilight, because... well, duh. The Hunger Games, however, for a much different reason. I mean, it was ok. It was enjoyable. But, it really irked me when I kept seeing so many little poor writing choices strewn all over the place that could have been effortlessly-fixed in seconds. Also, how it portrayed every gladiator but the main characters as "evil". Not to mention how these two main characters borderlined on the Mary-Sue.
