You know what "classic movie" I can't comprehend the popularity of?

ITT: Circle jerk about disliking popular movies. Yep, so cool and edgy.

Anyway I like Forrest Gump. It's about a good person with mental retardation meandering through life, oftentimes not understanding what is occurring, and ending up with a good ending. It also contrasts with all the other characters Forrest meets along the way, many of which end up in worse situations. I understood the movie as: life is random, some have it easy, others do not, some can find happiness, some die, some make peace with their disabilities, some make sacrifices, some don't, etc.
It's weird isn't it? similar thing with Big Bang Theory recently, amazingly for a show they is popular a very high % of people posting did not like it.

Forest Gump is an interesting movie about an interesting time of American life mixed with an interesting mental disorder. Overrated? Who the hell rates it? It's popular because a lot of people liked it and watched it, if you didn't like it and didn't watch it then you just don't share the same tastes as the majority of Americans... It's ok...

It's okay. I hated it for a while there because people in my dorm would quote it all the time and it irritated me to no end.

I actually loved the movie the story and the characters are all so flawed and it shows how if you are a good person and push forward things will work out for the best. The movie had so many well done scenes and tons of interesting twists on actual history. If people don't like it that is fine but you can't deny that it is a well made movie.

Avatar and Psycho, for me.

Avatar was just "Blue Pocahontas in Space" in my eyes. It didn't do anything special outside of visuals. And, let's be honest, here. "Unobtainium"?
It was a joke/reference. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unobtainium]

I don't know why people make such a big deal about that word.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. That said I do enjoy Forest Gump because it shows just how unpredictable life ends up being and how little we understand of the history that we live through. Plus he's a generally likable character living the American dream and Tom Hanks plays the part brilliantly.

I frankly do not understand the appeal of this movie, to me it seems to be advertising that if you blindly follow your life views you will end up being a successful person in life.
I never really saw it as having a message. It was just about a guy, that stuff happened too.

Yeah, but when it's a joke/reference that you were beaten to by The Core, you know there's something wrong. Seriously, The Core was horrendous, don't associate yourself with it. (not that I don't think Avatar was horrendous for its own derpy reasons).

Anyway, my pick for overrated film (aside from Avatar) is the Star Wars original trilogy. My theory on its massive popularity is just that there's so little it competes against, particularly at the time of release when it blew everyone away. We need more galaxy spanning sci fi series dammit, and better ones this time. Ones without teddy bears defeating a galaxy conquering army by throwing rocks at them. I'd prefer something deep and smart, like The Godfather in space, but I'd happily settle for more high spirited flashy adventures, Serenity was pretty damn cool afterall. You can even set them in the star wars universe if you want guaranteed success, just don't let George Lucas near them. There's a ridiculously bloated expanded universe for star wars, some of it must be good (hell, if you could filmify Kotor 2 (and if need be for plot thingies, Kotor 1) but give the director the time and budget to finish the damned thing, that could be pretty cool).

Well, pointless tired ramble over with (almost 6am and I can't sleep, at least I have the internet to distract me, huzzah), the gist is we need more big epic space thingies.

OT: Eh, Forrest Gump is alright I guess, I enjoyed it when I was in my early t(w)eens and haven't seen it since, so my opinion is basically meaningless.

I don't think you read very much into the movie, it's a period piece not a life lessons sort of thing.

It's not a very good movie.

It's loaded with Americana and sticky sweet sentimentality though, so it had a fairly broad appeal. It winning Best Picture over the more influential and experimental Pulp Fiction is one of many reasons why it's hard to take the Academy Awards seriously.
WAIT WHAT? I was sure Pulp Fiction was going to be the film the OP was talking about seeing the title. Experimental yes? And sure it has some funny scenes and some good sequences, but I think Pulp Fiction is one of the most over-rated film of all time (and I like it). Just because it's experimental doesn't make it automatically good. I don't think it's any coincidence that there hasn't been any films like Pulp Fiction since.
