Aeris/Aerith was tragic. And imo a grounbreaking moment in bringing emotion to a platform such as video games. Though the Epser terra and the tormented magitek experiment general celes are way more interesting.

Honorable mention to an operatic giant octopus. Which if you break it down the opear scene is probably the first honest heartfelt moment i can remember in a game. Something square has failed miserably at since the areith tifa cloud love triangle. Tidus and Yuna yelling in the wind just doesn't cut it.

FF 7 and 8 are overrated, as 6 is the the best of the FFs in my eyes for its wondrous characters, pacing, and gameplay.
This is very true. 6 or FF3 if your in the U.S. is and prob and will be the best overall FF game period. But it doesn't make 7 a bad game by any means.
It's not that I hate 7 (Seeing as I've never played it, it would be rude to call it shit) but I hate the fanboys for it that defend it so. And Aeris' death scene was not remarkable.
It was if you'd played the entire game up to that point and grown attached to the character. Likely less so if you already know she's going to die.

I'm gonna have to go with Final Fantasy 9 and 10 as my favorites...since I really can't choose between either. I love them both oh so much. I need to actually go out and purchase 9 though. I borrowed it from a friend and gave it back once I was done...I've never played it again =/ It still doesn't diminish the fact that I love it.

VIII was fantastic, i was never really drawn into any of the FF's but when i played VIII i was swallowed whole by it's world.
It was far more involving and the characters where just more likable, despite Squall and his general angsty stereotype template.
It was a solid cast for the most part.

I agree that the VII spinoffs need to stop, rather, needed to stop about 4-5 years ago at a minimum. I'd want a spinoff for VI but for the fact that all the magic in the world was lost and it wouldn't play very well. A Crisis Core type prequel-spinoff focused on the Magitek soldiers wouldn't work that well either. Anyway, I would lend grudging support to VIII getting more attention, but what about IX? Cartoony isn't the same thing as bad, people, and the whole SeeD thing seems like it would be fairly similar to FFVII, at least on the surface.

I broke my X button playing VIII.

But it was my favourite too; I always just assumed because it was the first Final Fantasy that I played. Was that the case with you?
Which was your favourite 7 or 8, if it's 7 then my answer is that might just be the case, it was the first 3D RPG I played, had a overwhelming sense of "never seen anything like this before have you!"

I don't think 8 can be over-rated because hardly anyone rates it, well from what I've gathered talking to people anyway. But like I said before, I've not played anything pre-FF7, so I can't compare them.

Aries death scene wasn't remarkable, but for mainstream gamers it was a shock, main character don't tend to be killed off, especially when you 9 - 12, the main character ALWAYS save the day.

I thought Squall and Rinoa's love was handled very well, I found someone who said it was unrealistic, but, Squalls a digital copy of me, my first girlfriend was a carbon copy of Rinoa and it pretty much happened at the same pace, few similar key events, she stopped me being such a cold person, like Rinoa did with Squall, but this is something for some forum somewhere else, or a therapist becuase I keep comparing my life to a video game.....

Anyway, I'm surprised firstly because this has any replies and secondly because I wasn't flamed haha

I never completed 8 because of the setting. It just was, well, BORING. I never made it past the first disc.

FF7 wasn't great by any stretch either, but it kept me entertained until massive monsters called WEAPONS come out of the earth for... what reason again? Maybe Japenese culture is a little too whacked out for me to follow for an extended period of time.

Final Fantasy 8 was my favorite. It's not that I hated FF7, but killing off my cleric right as I'm getting ready to go fight a red dragon that casts bio every five seconds is what I would call a giant dick move. FF10 was okay I suppose. Nothing great. I really liked FF12, but it seems that no one shares that sentiment.

I liked VIII more than the others, though admittedly I stopped playing it as it became repetitive. And I'm so glad there's someone else who thinks IX sucked. I figured I was the only one who carried such sentiments on this site.

Actually, I forgot to mention this. There never should have been any VII spinoffs, ever. Every single thing that I've come across has be absolutely terrible, and has hampered my memory and enjoyment of the original game.
