I use facebook a lot, its an easy way to stay in touch with friends and it has fun things to do when you're bored.

However there is one thing that really gets under my skin when I'm on Facebook and thats when people post things like
"A mom beat her kid for days. A week later the boy asks if he can go to a friend's house and she says, "Sure but if you get stolen I ain't lookin' for you." So later the police pull up, they have the boy and a kidnapper and tell his mother, "He gave himself up to the kidnapper." And the mother asks why, the boy says, "Because you said if I get stolen you won't come looking for me." Click like if you are against child abuse.

or

"A boy was almost beaten to death on his way to school, he was forced to strip all his clothes off, then they stole his phone and started to kick and punch him in the head before setting a dog on him.
The sad thing is that 97% of people would just walk past, 2% would stand and watch, only 1% would try and help out. No one tried to help david out.

Like this if your the 1% that would help.
"

Its really annoying because its just a way for people to try and show others what a "good" person they are and how they really care about the misfortunes of others and how they're such a goddamned champion of justice.
I hate it because in a lot of these things they talk about how the people who "like" are automatically so much morally better than the people who dont. Im sure these people are decent blokes and all its just you dont need to announce to the world how much you care about unfortunate people. All it does is give people a false sense of accomplishment over how much of a good person they are and all the good things they are supporting, if you care so much about child abuse/starving children/gang activity/whatever then prove it through actions, not by reposting annoying messages.

Rant over, so escapists how was your day?

EDIT: I cant believe only one person has told me about their day :(

It's exactly the same as chain letters / pyramid schemes / Pass-this-on-or-the-booga-wooga-curse-will-get-you that have been going on since the Pony Express.

Ignore and move on.

Im certainly familiar with it, Ive seen it everywhere, this website included, though very, very rarely compared to other outlets. The big place its a problem for me is facebook, I have one girl in particular (who I just recently started hiding her status updates) who literally posts one of those stories every single day complete with a comment along the lines of "I am just speechless" or "I cant believe this horrible person would do this", ynow, cookie cutter responses to situations that no sane person would be in favor of.

On a completely unrelated note, I believe that all bad and hurtful things are bad and hurtful, and people who do them are mean.

Edit: On the subject of how my day was, my high school sweetheart came into town for a week, I havnt seen her in 3 years, but because I had lost my phone (And never found it, getting a new one tommorow) I couldn't reply to her text messages, which apparently included sexual advances. Go figure. She didn't seem content with my explanation that my phone has literally been gone for a week, and she went home, which is a 6 hour drive from here, two days ago.

After I explained that I had no phone, and as such was not just ignoring her texts and advances, she deleted all her comments on the thread, removed me from her friends list, and to the best of my knowledge, appears to have deleted her facebook profile. It was also the last time she was coming into town, as shes joining the navy in a few months.

...I have no idea why she deleted her profile, I don't really even want to know, she may not have even removed me, it could have just deleted all that stuff when the profile went, but for whatever reason, every trace of her on facebook is gone.

For bonus points, I don't have her phone number anymore. Because it was on my other phone.

And yes I know this is self involved venting, but Im angsty about it xD..

It pisses me off to no end too, but the moment I tried to tell them to cut it out, a shit ton of negativity falls on, and I quote, "my godless misanthropic head".

Things like this HAVE existed way before Facebook, though, so its just better off ignored.

I get that alot. Its because of how I dislike people who do bad things. I consider myself a trailblazer of sorts.

Really now, how have you not long since passed the point where you simply click "delete/hide post" and not give such things a second thought? Possibly hiding future posts from that person as well, depending on who they are.

It's the same as how chain letters used to be (still are?) common with emails. Just ignore them, it's spam. Big deal.

Lose 1d20 sanity points.
Well that sounds annoying it's a good thing I don't use Facebook I guess, well I guess people will take whatever opportunity to say they're good people without actually showing it, also this sounds kinda like those chain E-mails that you have to send to everybody to say you're a good person and those are very annoying.
As for my day, it was fine I didn't hurt myself in any way which is a rare occurrence!

This reminds me of a similar pointless movement on Facebook where for a particular day lots of people changed their profile image to that of a cartoon character to be against child abuse, did nothing except show that many people are against abuse which isn't exactly a surprise, no actual donation or helping of charity involved. Now if all those people had just donated a small bit of money to children's charities each, then they might actually have achieved something.

I did actually change my profile picture to a cartoon for that thing, not because i thought it would end child abuse in any way, but because I thought it would be fun and interesting to see what other people remembered fondly from their childhoods. So it was more a campaign for nostalgia, if anything. I put Totoro :) and yeah these things are dumb and spammy, and make you seriously question the intelligence of the people who post them.

Ah, yes, slacktivision. All the moral superiority of feeling like you've done something, without actually having to do anything.

They're just an evolution of chain mail. Ignore them and slap the person who sent it to you.

I did the whole "child abuse profile pic thingie" because I felt like it (I had an excuse to change my profile pic to Freakazoid!) I know it's not going to change anything, but, it was just something to do. As for the chain statuses, I only pay attention to the parodies. For example, they have a parody for the "end bullying" one with Tolkien fantasy. "That Hobbit you called fat? He skipped second breakfast." Hilarious!

so true
anyway my day sucked
i spent the day on a train too and from Melbourne
to get new braces on my bottom teeth, this in this self hurts,
but to make thing worse they put to blobs of glue on my to back teeth some i cant close my mouth properly which results in a sore jaw be cause i cant get my lower jaw into the 'comfy' spot and i also cant eat properly. All of this resulted in a massive headache and my painkillers are barely working. i am also constantly moving my jaw to find the aforementioned 'comfy' spot and keep banging my top front teeth on my bottom teeth which means lots more pain,HOORAY,(that was sarcasm,in case your an idiot)
on the plus side i finally got halo reach today.
so i guess that's a win?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slacktivism

Slacktivism. It achieves nothing except making the participant feel better about themselves.

It actually does more harm than good since it takes attention away from legitimate charitable causes, and it makes people less likely to donate time or money to charity as they feel like they've already "done their bit".

Slacktivism isn't just annoying, it's harmful. Don't take part in it. If anybody criticises you for this, link them to the Slacktivism Wikipedia page and tell them to **** ***.
