It's not like these people would stop being "slacktivists" if they stopped using Facebook. It's just a "feel-good" thing, like the war on drugs.

It's like people who have clothes and accessories decorated with "Love" and "Be Yourself." People want to show how morally better they are than everyone else.

The one that made me wonder was a friend's status that went something like:
"X British servicemen and women have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan".

And someone "liked" it.

This reminds me of a similar pointless movement on Facebook where for a particular day lots of people changed their profile image to that of a cartoon character to be against child abuse, did nothing except show that many people are against abuse which isn't exactly a surprise, no actual donation or helping of charity involved.
One might argue that raising awareness of an issue is a valuable tool, whether or not there was a tangible or financial change. I believe the argument goes that we (people) have only so much mental real-estate and cannot remember or keep everything in mind. By reminding us of xyz, the issue is (even if only temporarily) brought back to the forefront. It's also why we're always bombarded by ads.

lol, this is where I struggle to draw the line between trolling and taking the piss... do I hate child abuse? yes of course.... Do I think that the best way to deal with abusers is to give them a taste of their own medicine... Yes I do.... but when I see the stupid bloody stories all I want to do is wind the posters up! I mean I never say anything nasty (trolling) but I feel they have earned to right to be mocked!

Interesting if I click 'like' will the abuse stop? I mean I have seen the adverts for a pound a month to african children and that seems to be working like a lead balloon so WTF does clicking 'like' do?

Also for a more realistic story I was walking through town the other day and saw a group of kids mugging an old lady and without thinking I jumped into the fray! Turned out alright in the end... me and the lads got £30 a piece and taught the old bugger a lesson she wouldn't soon forget! :)

My day's been alright i guess thank for asking :). Shower and now work time!

Also i agree, but it's just like that spam saying repost or something bad will happen...Just ignore it like everyone else.
I can't believe people actually get on your case when you tell them there being stupid though. Oh well people are crazy we all know that.

It's exactly the same as chain letters / pyramid schemes / Pass-this-on-or-the-booga-wooga-curse-will-get-you that have been going on since the Pony Express.

Ignore and move on.
In fact, ti kinda amuses me for exactly this reason.

It's like, "Hey, I remember this shit from the early days of the internet!"

Here's something I decided to put up on Facebook. Shame it didn't catch on; that would have been a hoot.

Scientists have found that people who re-post crap from their friends' walls actually have, on average, 84.3% less brain mass than people who don't. The same study went on to show that 99.7% of people WON'T re-post this in their status. Show everybody how much of an individual you are by reposting, and then they'll see just how capable you are of making your own decisions and forming original thought without being influenced by stupid facebook spam

YES! This, so this! Click like to not give a crap... annoys the ever loving fuck out of me. Although if people hooked that particular like function up to peoples bank accounts (via Zynga maybe?) to give 50p for every like... not that would be pretty awesome.

yes it's annoying, I dislike chain-anything. Not because it's a false sense of charity, but just because it's a chain message.

The problem with those messages is that it prompts you to respond by trying to guilt you into reposting. It's like a mental virus that relies on guilt to survive.

I will not be "guilty" of thinking for myself, thank you very much.
