Yes you heard me. I felt that given the situation, they did everything that they needed to do and they did it valliantly. I mean its the year 2033, the entire earth is gone, the air itself is posin, the mutants kill without pity, and the communists are pressing at the line, the only line keeping humanity alive and well. So, despite common feeling, I actually supported their cause.

Haha misleading titles, I love those, but seriously, have you ever supported the armies of your enemies, if only in goal? As I already mentioned I did kind of support Metro 2033's nazi's but I also felt a common goal with the Master from Fallout 1. He just wanted to ensure life's survival via the better race, Super Mutants.
Admitidly that lead to many a death, but his intent was noble.

Phew, I thought there were gonna be flames...

BIG. FLAMES.

OT: Yeah, if a story can make you empathise with an enemy it adds an extra layer of depth. For instance, in the book series the Shadows of the Apt, the reader is often told the story from the prospective of a 'bad guy' Thalric. He's ruthless, cold and would do anything for the Empire. He later realises, through betrayal and backdoor politics, that he loves the Empire, but not the people running it. Great character.

I too felt an affinity for Owyn Lyons' bunch. One wonders if Bethesda's writers didn't think "Well, the Brotherhood's all about tech for tech's sake, but no way are the Followers of the Apocalypse all the way into DC, so let's create a split Brotherhood to serve the same purpose."

Because really, the East Coast BoS and the FotA have the same goals.

I wonder if everyone will read the OP...

OT: I haven't played Metro 2033, but I thought it looked interesting.

I think being able to relate to the enemy and see where they are coming from, is the mark of a truly well written narrative (I´m purposefully not limiting this to games, because I well it applies to any kind of fiction).

Let´s face it, an enemy that is just an assortment of stupidity and vileness, isn´t really that interessting.

Unfortunately, I´m currently drawing a blank, when it comes to finding an examples that is not really spoiler laden...

Hopefully they will, and I reccomend that you give it a try, it's kind of like a post apoclyptic Half-life, atleast thats the way I think of it.

Nice work. I was about to come in here screaming about the countless people lost in the war and how racists are what is wrong with this world. But you tricked me with your title so for that. Nice one, you got me.

The bad guys from the film "XXX". Those guys were fucking sweet. If I were Vin Diesel, I would have kicked Sammy J in teh nuts and partied beyond the apocolypse.

In games... Kane (C&C) was kinda cool.

RL... Stalin FTW!!

Yeah, I supported the Decepticons in "Megatron: Origin". Mainly because the Autobots were just a bunch of upper class douchebags and the Decepticons themselves began as a group of disgruntled Energon miners who lost their jobs to big business. It's only near the end of the story that Megatron's like "dude I have an army now. LET'S TAKE CYBERTRON WOOO."

As for real life...I'm a pacifist, so I'm on the fence for wars. I think both sides were as bad as each other, with the exception of World War II and Nazi Germany.

Nazis are on par with zombies on things you can kill without controversy.

There was a cracked article about this, Movie Villains who really weren't so bad.

OT:Enemies I sympathise with? Do you mean enemies who were only doing what they believed was right? OR enemies who had no other options but to BE my enemy?

I suppose in the DoW series usually your enemies believe that they are in the right. (Except Tyranids they can just screw themselves.)

Enemies who were left without another choice would be Husks and Collectors in ME2. Unlucky bastards were reprogrammed just to serve.

OMG DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY OF MY ANCESTOR DI....

Oh. You got me :) Good one. And yeah, all the time. I enjoy emphasising with my enemies. Some times I'll even go out of my way to see things from their view. And like taht guy up there said, its the mark of a good narrative.

i love the bad guy in most works when the goal is to make the lot of the common people better rather than just take over the world for powers sake but i am having a brain fart at the moment so i cant remember an example

You know, after I think about it, I actually supported what the templars were doing in Assassin's Creed 1. If you hear all of their stories you might be convinced that the assassins were evil and the templars were just peace keepers.

Yeah The Master from Fallout was cool. Plus he had the decency to blow himself up whe he realizes his plan will never succeed.

Probably the Enclave from the Fallout universe. Sure, they are xenophobic dicks, but they have the ability to manufactered goods. Then again they also wanted to to kill all mutation...and that is pretty much everyone...uhh...yeah I don't know where I'm going with this.

Oh god that game is amazing. At least in my opinion. I'm going to reserve judgement on the Metro 2033 Nazi's until I finish with the book.
OT:I don't remember any particular cases. I might have just been too busy murderizing them all.

Calm down Mr Dragon.
Your flames are not required

OT: I have been known to side with the bad guys occasionally. Mainly when the "goodies" have basically the same goal but are pretentious douches as well

Also: Just noticed that I have had the "spot check" Captcha twice in a row. Is it actually doing them for every post or is that just bad luck?
