I haven't seen a game that was focused on piloting a space vessel (think freelancer, X-Wing etc etc) in years, how come we don't see them anymore?

They have been making a comeback recently. Mainly thanks to kickstarter. Hopefully they are successful and we see more of them.

Ahh good times, brings back memories.

I think it might have just been a phase, just like how zombies got popular due to Day Z, flying game's will come back just wait a few years.

There's Strike Suit Zero, though I personally have some mixed feelings about all of this. At first I was super excited about seeing a mech game on PC that didn't feature exclusively slow moving walkers, but then whenever I see any mention of it, people are saying it reminds them more of the old space combat sims more than anything else (not that here's anything wrong with that, it's just not what I was looking forward to). But yeah, it seems like that coming out recently has triggered a lot of latent memories.

The zombie thing was about one it's way out by the time Day Z came around.

There has been a recent addition actually, goes by the name of Strike Suit Zero.
It's cheap, they have a great combat system, ship even changes into a mech and does anime silliness for no real reason.

Granted it is no Freespace or Starlancer but for a newbie team it is some great work, and perhaps it will lure some bigger names into the scene when the kickstarter boys bring back that space sim rumble.

After Freespace 2 what's the point? No space sim will ever be that good, if game genres were a contest it won with ease.

On a slightly more serious note however as others have pointed out the genre's been making a comeback recently. There are a whole slew of smaller studio projects released or in the works while there are two massive games in the works by some of the biggest names in the industry.

There's a free indie game called Wing Commander Saga, built using the Freespace 2 engine. It combines the setting of the original Wing Commander games with the mechanics of Freespace 2. It's worth a play.

I've got Battlefront II awaiting me at home, just got a PC that can run it. I'm very excited.

Granted it's not fully about that (in fact the ship sections are relatively few) but god-damn they are fun.

I think you may be confused as to why Day Z was so popular. Zombies didn't make a comeback because of Day Z, zombies were just always a topic to geek over and Day Z (as well as left 4 dead, dead island, call of duty, [insert generic zombie title here]) decided they should capitalize on it.

But yeah space sims are making a comeback

The X series has been consistently releasing games every two or three years for quite a while now. They never disappeared, people just stopped looking.
