You know what, I think Mass Effect 3 will be awesome!

Ok, here's my promised counter-thread.

Mass Effect is one of my favourite series of games. Ever since I opened the first and smelled it's marzipan freshness I've been in love with it. It's got all the dialogue and choices and codex and backstory for the RPGers, and for the FPS/OTSS crowd it's got plenty of juicy and well executed combat with powers for everyone's enjoyment. Yeah there are ways to make it better and improvements that could be made, but all in all it went together pretty tightly.

It's story is pretty good and people love the characters, all of whom are quite well rounded and each has their particular sense of humor to appeal to different people. They've kept refining everything and it's really worked so far, from the cumbersome inventory and power screens to the streamlined system we saw in ME2, to whatever they decide to keep or change in 3.

So yeah, if you want to be pessimistic and complain about EA stick to the "Mass Effect 3 is going to fail" threads. But if you're like me and are on the edge of your seat for the next 10 months waiting for the announcement that legion defeats a reaper with a dancing contest, then join the party.

It'll be awesome, and no one doubts that; we're just sad that it sounds like less and less of an RPG every time we hear about it.

See, here's what I don't quite understand. In every single article and in multiple press releases, Bioware has gone on record to say that they're improving and bringing back RPG elements to Mass Effect 3.

Here's a list of what we KNOW:
- Combat will be more fluid with SWAT turns and rolls
- Some RPG elements are returning.
- Meaningless stats are gone and are being replaced with meaningful ones.
- Weapon Mods are making a return
- Melee will be improved.
- Emphasis on Z-Axis gameplay
- Larger environments with less chest-high-walls.

All of that sounds great!

It sounds like less and less of a traditional RPG every time we hear about it.

It's still gonna have awesome characters, great dialogue and an interesting story.

If, however, they actually do intend to cut into those things for the sake of 'broadening market appeal', I shall be very upset.

Being a PS3 owner I haven't played the first game which must have been a lot more RPG-ish so I'm a little bit confused as to why anyone thought of it as a FPSRPG to begin with. It's a very long, well written FPS with branching conversation paths, the only RPG element is a level up system which could easily be replaced by a standard FPS system like finding new guns or new tech things to stick to your jacket for the biotic stuff.

I'm not criticising the game I just don't see why people are thinking of it as an RPG when to me it just isn't.

Thank you for putting my thoughts into words, good sir.

Couple of problems. The combat is far from juicy. It is the definition of simplicity and repetition. Also, they haven't kept refining everything. They just threw most of what could've been improved straight the fuck out to either be replaced by a crappy substitute or by nothing at all.

Other than that, continue with your celebrations.
I found the combat actually very comparable to Assassins Creed (the first). People complained that it was far too repetative, but if you use your imagination there's absolutely no reason why it has to be. You can follow the safe repetative path, or you can go batshit nuts with everything they've given you. Plus they're supposed to be changing it to be less Wally McChesthigh anyway.

And I sincerely hope they didn't just throw out the inventory system. I hope they took it and burnt it along with the person that came up with it. The upgrades system and bulletpowers in ME2 were a vast improvement for anyone who wants to spend their pissing about time interacting with characters. There's careful micromanagement, then there's just taking up my time having to clean out my inventory once an hour.

Also, if anyone works for, or knows anyone who works for Bioware, i think the Legion in a dance-off to the death with a reaper is a pure gold idea. Call me!

Listen, I completely agree with you Zantos but there is already a thread like this so making another one was a bit redundant.

But yeah, ME3 will be awesome.

The idea was this was for people who are actually stoked about it to discuss, as it said in my OP. Unfortunately I was diluded in ever thinking that would be the case.

ME2 was a pretty good game, but only in regards to the characters and visuals.

The gameplay was repetive as hell. So much so that I just can't be bothered playing through it again because the gameplay is such a boring chore. I literally have to fight my way through the sludgy shoot-outs so I can get to the story bits, which is the only thing I'm really interested in anyway.

Not that ME1 was much better, but atleast the gameplay had more variety in it. When you're making a game that's atleast 25 hours in length, then you'd better have some gameplay variety instead of the same fucking hallway shoot-outs.

Love it, love everything about it!

I hope Mass Effect 3 has that quote (well not that quote, but the original) playing all over the citadel. Especially in the elevators, which if I keep mentioning then they WILL bring them back.

It does sound great, and I'm incredibly pumped for this game. However, a lot of the traditional RPG elements were stripped from the second game, to the point that the next person I'm going to quote said it felt like a complex FPS (except in the third person, I assume :p). All. That sounds great, but while those are all excellent improvements, none of them are really RPGish. Mass Effect 2 stripped away a lot of traditional core RPG elements - loot, inventories, interesting skill trees, shops, three dimensional decisions, etc. While I'll happilly buy ME3 without them, it'd be fantastic to get them back.

Mass Effect 1 was instantly recognizable as an RPG, and was reminiscent of KotOR. ME2 was designed to make it feel a lot more fast paced and shooterish, so that new players would feel the way you do about it, while older ones could be happy with what remained.

Also, I should probably clear something up: when I say RPG, I mean traditional RPG. As a role playing game, Mass Effect 3 will probably be one of the finest ever to come out, but it now seems as if it'll be barely recognizable as a traditional RPG at all. That's not necessarily good or bad; it's just that a lot of us will miss it.

In that case allow me to apologize for my earlier comment, I was not aware of this.

Have a good one.
