I'd like to see a Mario game that controls like the 3D titles, but has a level structure and difficulty curve like the original 2D games.

Consider New Super Mario Bros: It was short, but it was fun because brought back the classic game structure that worked so well with the first Mario games. Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy had a more adventure-game feel about them. They were fun, but they sort of lacked the arcade feel that kept me coming back to the 2D games and NSMB. A 3D Mario game with that arcade feel would be a good direction for Nintendo to take the series in.

Thoughts?

Im sick of Mario to be honest, but thats probably because I never grew up playing Mario games like most people out there who love him to death. Your concept is ironic to me. Mainly because I had always felt that the Mario games you mentioned, that had an "adventure" feel to them, felt totally true to the arcade aspect the old Mario games had. Why dont we try defining what an arcade feel is? To me, its being able to start up a game, and be able to play for merely 5 minutes or 5 hours and feel totally satisfied either way. I think all Mario games have lived up to that extremely well.

and thats my two cents :D

So you want new characters, fine.

It is an undisclosed time after the events of Super Mario Galaxy. Mario, Peach, Bowser, etc are all either dead or on the verge. All is not well in the Mushroom Kingdom though, the evil Purple Toads killed all of the nice white ones and now rule the land with an iron fist. Led by the Grand Spore , they sow terror throughout the land. One humanoid man named Antonio works for a a rebel faction made up of what is left of the old regime. Garbed in orange and black he carries out hit and run attacks for the Leader, a mysterious shadow behind a curtain at the Old Castle. He is assisted by Prince Toadstool(guess who he's related to), a royal pain in the ass and biggest coward in the Old Regime, Bork, a half Boo half Koopa hybrid who supplies Antonio with the Gray Stars, he has been known to collaborate with the purple Toads when it suits him.

Next there is Hannwannaakalluu, a Delfinoin with a nasty temper and an even nastier punch. His ward is Colleen, a feisty redhead who is rumored to be in possession of the last true Gold Star(all Gold Stars were thought to have been wiped out when the Purple Toads took over).

Theres your goddamn new cast of characters.

Why don't you just play the old games? I mean...they can't keep remaking the exact same formula over and over again. If a game maker does that, they will at best maintain the exact same fan base but more likely lose their audience's interest. They added adventure elements because after Super Mario World (along with Yoshi's Island) there wasn't anywhere else to go. There are a ton of fan levels and remakes on the web if you just want new content.

Personally, I'm getting more and more giddy for the indie stuff coming out on the Wii anyways, out with the old I say. Just look at 'Mushroom Men'. A civil war between 3-inch spore people with user created weapons and a LES CLAYPOOL soundtrack? That's like 8 different fantasies coming true at once for me.

Just click on the link and get a sample of the awesomeness:

That link says mushrooms are plants, they are clearly a plant-like fungi. Plants and fungi are two completely different Kingdoms.

Mario may be old and cliched, indeed, but would we not have realized this without the comments of Yahtzee? (An observation, not fact.)

I saw that Mario was overused before yahtzee stated it so...
Right, and I didn't think quicktime events were artificial or that Halo was overrated before Yahtzee pointed out the Elephant in the room. A game franchise with 30+ titles is going to start getting old even if the latest title is the second coming, whether someone points it out in a large public manner or not.

Bringing back a low difficulty curve to a game in 3d which made the transition from 2d is ridiculously hard, at least in terms of control scheme. In terms of actual platforming, it can be tricky too. My textbook example is that of the 3d Worms games; Forts Under Siege, Worms 3d, and Worms 4: Mayhem are all far more difficult to control and move about in than the 2d iterations. The single biggest flaw was that the camera didn't work quite right, but there were game mechanics easy in 2d which simply didn't translate, such as the ninja rope.

You're happy with the way the 3d Marios control, ok, fine, assuming that part of the difficulty curve is ok, there are other things that can be done, such as changing early jumps to be from one straight edge to another. That way, the angle of approach matters far less and getting the jump right is simpler for a novice. Here's a thought: the original marios can get away with going pretty fast because you could see the goombas ahead and things on the other side of obstacles. How would this get translated into 3d better than it has been? I think that to a point, the faster you can go the more fun you have. (I also think 3d Mario sould beat coins out of things with his head FAR more, but that's just me)

As crazy as this sounds, I think the single biggest thing going for the structure of the original Mario games is blinding linearity. There's a sense in a 2d game of having only one way to go that somwhow tends to suffer with a 3d gameworld.

I confess, I enjoy Mario, however I don't play all of his games. I played the New Super Mario Bros simply because my brother had it, but I didn't like it one bit. It's the same stuff but in unnecessary 3D. I also don't play things like Mario party or any of the sports spin offs.

I'm aware the story's always going to be the same but here are the reasons for Mario games I play.

Original - fun
Mario Bros 2 - New enemies, bosses, items and character selection
Mario Bros 3 - added power ups, levels, puzzles, bosses
Mario 64 - 3D, puzzles, fun obstacles, not side scroll platforming
Mario Party 1 - and nothing above it
Mario Kart 64 - My first Mario Kart, item's are fun
Mario Kart DS - Only to play friends at school.
Mario Galaxy - Gravitational obstacles (more fun than thought), intuitive controls, overall level variety and design

I never really liked Mario. My first memories of it is waiting at a skating rink at the age of three watching the attract mode over and over because no one would play it.
