Actually, Scully, you're right. You CLEARLY wouldn't mind then if the mods gave you a little vacation from the site, seeing as "worse things have happened". I think you'll really enjoy your time away from us crybabies.
It really would not be the end of my world, no. I think it would be undeserved (maybe), but I wouldn't contest it either. Good to see the people who complain about the mods running to them though...

Man, some of you need to pull your lips off The Escapist's dick long enough to see it's not all sunshine and rainbows around here. I seriously couldn't read threads I had created and would just have to come back hours later for it to work.

Also, being in IT, I see no reason why the site would have to have ANY downtime while this so-called changeover happens. You're just making excuses for bad decisions of other people you don't know. You might even hate them in 3 months!
If you?re in IT then frankly you should know that transitions, upgrades and patching - even when everyone fucks their Is and fists their Ts - can be unpredictable and cause drama.

A hobbyist website was flakey for a week; get a goddamn grip.

I can only imagine someone in IT saying something like this being the 9-5 helpdesk brand IT. Oblivious to the real work that has to be done afterhours because it will cause brief downtime at best, and cascading headaches at worst.

No way man, this is way worse than the TSB bank transition when people couldn't access their money (but they could other people's!) or pay their mortgages. I wanted to say something to people who don't care about what I think and I had to wait all day! (Which, on reflection, is remarkably like dealing with TSB.)

When did I complain about the mods? I ironically have never really had a problem with them even though I'm one of WW's most vocal supporters.

Even if it turns out that this site was just getting fixed behind the scenes and everything's really all fine, I'm still gonna be super pissed.

They didn't let anyone know about this. Not a forum post or anything. Even the FUCKING EXISTING SITE TEAM has to guess what the hell is going on. This is not how you manage a site and community, people!!!
Wow...

Is this the first time you have dealt with corporations? or Red tape?

They don't care who buys what from them or what services you use from them, only the money in fact
only matters. Defy is prime example of this as they don't care about the small details of what follows next, they have washed their hands of it long ago.

Also if we the site is moving the hiccups are because the IT staff is trying to work with this site. Its not an easy thing to do considering the web site was left "alone" by Defy for some time. The people behind the scenes really don't own much to the community. Their only job is to work with this site and get it up to par, that's it.

You sure you want to take that tone with me? Forum superstars have been banned for less when addressing me like that.
Forum superstars?! Christ, my sides.
Do you not remember Vault101? Everyone loved her and a ton of people, including me, changed our avatars to show solidarity when she was banned.

I work in IT and you guys are wrong. Downtimes and tricky problems are inevitable, zero communication with customers/consumers/visitors/members/whatever is not. Thats clearly whats being criticised here.

"Massive non event" - for an entire week it wasn't clear whether the constant 504s and 502s were the sites death rattle or the phoenix rising from the ashes. We still don't know, really, even if its more stable now. Thats a massive non event? Sure, in the greater context of kids starving in Africa or Saturn having no solid surface thats true I guess. In the smaller context of the Escapist and its user base it is a massive event though.

I second the notion that some people are overreacting. I also second whoever accused you of dickriding.
But if you'd read the entire topic, I wouldnt need to say this, again.

Who is going to communicate with us? Defy, who straight up abandoned this site some time ago? A new owner, who doesnt seem to legally own the site, and may not be in a great position to take responsibility for something when a deal isnt public? Or the other thing I mentioned, why take responsibility for it? Why have your opening act be the face of constant errors and down time, when if you stay dead quiet it can just as easily be Defy's fault and instead be the face of a new, working site weeks down the track.

Most of us who think this topic is ridiculous arent riding anyone's dick. We're pointing out the fallacy in what is being whined over. There is no upper command structure. There is no one at the top. Its whining about how someone didnt take responsibility of the errors when there is no one to take responsibility. The communication of these errors is the exact same communication of the last year. None.

Warnings for everyone. :) I'm surprised the mods haven't locked this yet, but I'm glad they didn't. I don't believe in locking threads that aren't stickied. Either leave it alone or send it to the trash. And even in the case of the latter, I only do it when the OP has something particularly nasty in it or if it's spam.

Anyway though. I've pretty much said everything there is to say now about this.

Apparently a lot of you have super high hopes for a reversal by Defy, or a very little knowledge about the real world.

You all seem to be glazing over the repeated mention I make of whether a theoretical new owner COULD say something. That's clearly a Defy trademark at the bottom of the page, last time I checked. A sale isnt a sale until its final. And speaking openly about a sale which isnt public and final violates all sorts of NDA and contract laws.

PS: You seem to be blurring the fact there are multiple detractors. I have received no spankings, nor wished anyone ill, or to hurry and jump ship. Im just questioning the sudden and pointless need to throw shade at a situation which has been the status quo for over a year, by someone who is running, at this point, a rival site.

I mean you can almost taste the 'I suppose you'd do it better?' that Arnox is hoping for.

Yup, I mixed you up with Baffle for a second. You stuck a dumb snide comment in there anyway so it doesn't really matter.

The status quo may have been zero communication but it was not "site unreachable 50% of the time/vague comments by mods and ex-staff". Lips, meet....
Lips meet....your own experience? Im not the only one in here who is saying that there have been no login errors, avatar errors, and the 50x errors are closer to 10% than 50% on my end. It's like people are having wildly different experiences with the site.

And the rare times a 50x error doesnt resolve with a single refresh, I just go do something else. Obviously hitting refresh more times wont resolve the problem of a site not handling its server/network traffic.
