No matter what you say Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 were infinitely better, and to a lesser extent Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights were better too.
I'm sorry, but claiming Neverwinter Nights is better than JRPGs (saying it's better than anything really) just lost you the right to have an opinion. I agree that the Baldurs Gates are infinitely better than most JRPGs though.

Well it had attacks of opportunity and all the other features of D&D by and large, along with pause and command combat and choices that effect other facets of the game (like befriending the giant spider rather than murdering it) and making choices as a lord of the land, all that was really different was it had less freedom and was third person and you could control your character with WSAD.

Edit: It also had a friend system where you could lose party members and make them do things based on how you interact with them and other characters. It actually did many interesting things. Also JRPGs are down there with drinking Chlorine on the scale of enjoyment for me, so I'm a little biased. Though I grant you FF6 was alright.

Edit 2: Also had prestige classes which I liked. I s'pose they would call them paragon tier classes now...

For me JRPGs are all about the story and characters. I think JRPGs are the best at making you feel connected to a character and the stories are always epic. But to be honest I haven't played that many anyway, I've played Persona 4 and Final Fantasy 6,7,8,9,10 and 13. I've played a few others aswell but from my limited knowledge of the genre I see it to be my favourite type of game.

Too much wall of text... so I didn't read it all.

But to your point of "defensive and embarrassed", it's more like this:

JRPG fans on this site are defensive because we are often trolled and ridiculed for the games we enjoy. It seems to most often come from fans of a certain other brand of RPG (add a W) and specifically from from fans of a certain company that's in the MM final (starts with a B).

Because of our enjoyment of that type of game, we get called "weeabo", "japanophile", "fanboy", etc...

And you're surprised that we might get a little defensive?
If anything it's the attitude on this site toward JRPGs that must change.
hey hey hey hey now, i am a bioware fanboy till death, but i absolutely LOVE JRPG's, and most bioware friends i know in real life are the same way

but i agree, jrpg gets put down by snobby elitism alot, its pretty shitty and needs to stop

i'm not going to read all of that, but my single greatest complaint about every JRPG i've tried (and i have successfully completed a few) is the extreme linearity. RPGs are all about the freedom in the game -- be it in how you choose to develop your character to how you move him/her/it through the world to get there.

JRPGs remove a great of that freedom -- and i don't like it.

Ya I've seen you around and you're okay Maverick. Sorry, don't mean to make a general sweep. It just gets tiring to have to defend the games I enjoy all the time. Especially since most of the attacks come from a certain group of people. Usually the same crowd that try to say that JRPGs aren't really RPGs. >.<

Again, no offense is meant to you.
no none taken, just was pointing out while i am a bioware die hard, i freaking love me some jrpg, my top 3 games im playing right now are ff9 ff13 and kotor, so 2/3 are jrpg's, but i do see your point, some wrpg people need to get off their high horses and realize just because in their part of the world they like it doesn't mean its the best in any possible way.

hell most wrpg's are just sandbox games, the only reason im a super bioware die hard is for their stories and character developments, otherwise i really dont think wrpg's are all that spectacular in the first place

So the offense is to the rest of us? Well if that's your attitude, what do you expect?

Alright then, I'll make a general statement and say all JRPGs suck, ignoring the ones I've played- Tales of Phantasia, FFVII, Front Missions 1 and 3- and enjoyed.

And, as with everything else I dislike, I'll put it down to the fans.

Final Fantasy Tactics had to be(again, for me) the most enjoyable game of the series.
I've never played Final Fantasy Tactics, though I've heard great things. What platform is it on? And Balthier - is that the Balthier of FFXII fame?
Tactics s originally on the PSone...but you can get it now for PSP,and if yo want, you can download it off of PSN for your PS3. And yes, it is Balthier from XII. You can also get Cloud from VII.
[sub]FF Tactics and FF XII take place in the same world, so if there's any similarities you notice between the two, now you know why.[/sub]

An attitude that didn't exist at all until I came to this site and was bombarded with elitist pricks. I actually enjoy both WRPG and JRPG (and always viewed them as one and the same - RPG).

Never thought of them being split until I came here. Thanks for proving my point. ;)
Lets try that again.

I like these games.

I also like Morrowind, Dragon Age, Gothic, Mass Effect, Diablo II, Torchlight, Neverwhinter Nights, Fallout, Mount & Blade [small]Though anyone disliking this game is liable to get a claymore to the face and my eternal opposition and hatred[/small]... so yeah.

I like RPGs

I'm offended.
You're infering that everyone who dislikes "J"RPGs is elitist until they do something resembling that episode of the Simpsons where Homer is saved by a gay guy and decides that that particular gay is OK.
You're the one whose first post in this topic was calling Bioware fans trolls.

I say again, it's the fans that put me off.

Now, if you really want me to repeat:
Sorry for the general sweep but it seems that MOST of the WRPG fanboys I've encountered are elitist pricks that do nothing but troll JRPG fans in threads devoted to the topic. Better?
Well where are they?

I'm like the most rage filled ************ here, and I like "J"RPGs.

[small]goddamn it I need to stab someone. To a game where my righteous fury will be fulfilled![/small]

That sounds awesome. Alas, I don't have a PSP, but I've done some reading and it appears the game originally came out on the Playstation, one of which I do have. I guess it's probably a slightly different version, but I'll look out for it neverthless.

Easy guys! Sebenko, I'm really glad you like those games (the JRPGs). What was it that made you enjoy those particular ones, and not others?

For the record, I'm a big BioWare fan too, and I would buy Mount and Blade if only I had a PC that was even vaguely capable of running the thing, the game looks sweet as.

(And for the guys calling me a hypocrite earlier on, yep, you're absolutely right, I couldn't resist having a few little digs at some other games though. Apologies for my bitchiness!)

In order: Interesting battles, first RPG and ROBOTS.

Reasons I didn't enjoy other JRPGs: I haven't played them, pretty much.

Also, M&B isn't exactly an intensive game. It runs on a 2Ghz single core, 1GB of RAM, has an option to change from DX9 to 8, and has a load of settings to control detail and battle size, so it should run well even on a standard office PC.
