Personally, I would do the following:

1) Stop making FF. There's been enough drivel after number 7 of the series, give it some time to be missed. And get some decent story writers for crying out Cloud. Sheesh.
2) Kick start the Mana series, even if it means rebooting the old games. Get some good story writing in there and make it seem sensible and immersive. For examples to avoid, see Metroid Other M and Dragon Age 2.
3) Get some classics, maybe even some obscure games, an overhaul. Chrono Trigger is a prime example. Think of what a graphics overhaul could do for this already legendary game. Secret of Evermore is another example.
4) Take some innovative risks. The cartoons of today are just simply horrid. Get some Mana-type cartoons out there, I'm sure someone would be interested in seeing Salamander fry something. And the sprite's character in general. And psychotic pink rabites. Hmmm, pink rabite slippers. Rabite bean bag chairs. Hmmmmmmmm........
5) Perhaps invest in another Tactics-type game. See what was good and bad about the games, incorporate more of the good while shaving the bad elements out and, perhaps, get some new ideas into the game. Story and characters are an absolute must in this endeavor.
6) If the urge to make FF starts happening again, see point #1.
I like your points but still my thoughts on them.
1) Stop making what final fantasy has become. Take a page out of the Shin Megami Tensei book, or hell take a page from Orge Tactics. Just let the 'main series' get some rest, what it has become is terrible.
2)I basically completely agree with that you said.
3)They did kinda do that with Ogre Tactics: Let Us Cling Together. They need to keep making those, because I LOVED that game. The way the story was told was fantastic. Yes they should take more older games though and breathe new life into them.
4) I agree here too. I mean the games they make now are ALMOST movies, just go all the way. Also merchandising the thing like Rabites is a brilliant idea.
5)Aka look at Shin Megami Tensei, Ogre Tactics, some other good games. Hell even Vampire: The Masquerade had interesting story telling. Although the game was kinda really glitchy.
Still yeah I more or less agree with that you're saying.

Do what the other main games have been doing: something different. That is why I love the Final Fantasy series. Unlike other series (won't mention do to it probably igniting flame wars), they actually try something different with the Final Fantasy games. Change the battle system around, level system, characters, everything. They don't just rehash the same shit over and over again. But, personally, I'd go with a darker story and some steampunk thrown in.

I tease at a FF7 remake before announcing that there will never be another Final Fantasy ever again.

Remake FFV and FFVI on 3DS.

Then hire Yasumi Matsuno to direct the Final Fantasy Tactics sequel.

Then pump more budget into Dragon Quest.

Then get a good FF MMO going.
i just said that. look at the post above you

The answer to this question is simple. Take the big budget cutscenes of FFXIII, the stories of FF VI-VIII and the gameplay of FF I-VI. Very simple, easy, and guaranteed to make everyone happy.

I'd take Final Fantasy out of the Cinematic RPG experience. I don't mind the linearity of any of the previous games, but I hate following a single straight line and looking at a cutscene every 5 minutes. A good game can be told just as well, if not better, through text.

I'm sure it's been said already, but a Final Fantasy 7 remake using the latest technology.

Well i've only played Final Fantasy's III & VII so i'd just sort of forget what it was labelled as and make it into my idea of a perfect game no matter how little it would have to do with Final Fantasy, then when i've decided on a good name for the game i'd just put Final Fantasy in the title before it, make 95% of the characters in to girls and make 45% of them act as if they're boys.
All the Final Fantasy fans would still buy it, and there are a hell of a lot of them, and maybe because it's so different I could attract fans who like the type of game it would be now, then just keep releasing games that would keep getting bought even if they were terrible =D

I used to love Final Fantasy. JRPGs are probably my favorite genre of games and I have a lot of good memories and late nights with Final Fantasy. But as I've grown old and my taste for games change I seem to be shying away from Final Fantasy but not JRPGs. Persona 4, Chrono Trigger, The World Ends With You, and the Tales series seem to have me hooked more than Final Fantasy ever did. But considering two of the of games I just listed were made by Square (TWEWY and Chrono Trigger) shows that they have the capacity to do better.

FF13 was a joke. The game took control away from the player, took away the beloved turn based combat, changed all of the maps to hallways, and made a cast of characters that is not only not customizable in the slightest but also unrelatable and uninteresting.

That's what I would focus on first. The characters. Make a cast that the players will love and that don't fall into the stereotypes that Square has made over the years (Tell me one disernable difference between Yuffie, Rikku, and Vanille and Shadow, Squall, and Armarant). Make characters with depth, make them have flaws, mixed agendas, and obstacles. Make them human. If the characters are good people will want to come back to them and experience them all over again (I've played the Assassin's Creed series 3 times because I love Altair and Ezio so much).

This next suggestion may sound odd, but go back to being able to name things. I always named the main character after me and the supporting characters after the friend that they acted the most like (except in the case of 10 and 8 in which case I named the Aeons/GFs in that manner). By allowing the character that sort of customization it makes the story so much more personal and will involve the character so much more than wha 13 did by saying "Here are some people, watch what they do."

Which leads me to my next suggestion. In my opinion 10 had the best combat system in the entire series, you didn't have to wait for your atb bar to fill up, you didn't have to input all of your commands at once, and you didn't have to choose only 3 or 4 of your characters to battle with you. You could switch out characters when you needed them and you saw who was going in what order so you could plan your strategies accordingly. However, I would keep the level up system from FF8. I'll admit that 8 was probably one of my least favorites in the series (next to 13) but they did this aspect right. The enemies level up along side you, meanign they provided a challenge but they weren't over powered if you hadn't grinded. If you're like me, you hate grinding and run away from battle more often then you probably should. But with 8's system, even if you do that you're still perfectly fine. A lot of us are only here for the story anyway.

Which brings me back to my final suggestion. Make the stories more on the micro threat level, rather than the macro. I found myself more compelled in Persona 4 when I was hunting down a local murderer more than I ever did trying to stop Sephiroth from destroying the world. In the micro setting the threat is more personal, the enemy is targeting people you know and love. In the macro setting their targeting everyone. In Fable 3 I chose to save my girlfriend rather than the protesters because I had more of a bond with her than them.

Final Fantasy is a fantastic series and I love it so. But there's no denying that it's been taking a downward turn over the years and I think it's about time we try to save it. Because, contrary to popular belief, it is not beyond saving.

Also? Vivi FTW

First thing I would do is force Square Einx's entire Final Fnatasy development team into playinf Final Fantasies 6, 7 and 8 and tell them "Do that, but without the whiny and emo kids."

Then I would tell them "Final Fantasy XIII sucked, no sequel, make a Final Fantasy 8 sequel."

To me Final Fantasy just needs to stop trying to "revolutionize" the JRPG industry. These days there are no good JRPGs and in my opinion that is because they seem to have all forsaken true turn based combat. I find myself going back to PS favorites of mine when I want a fun RPG experience, and while there are plenty of old PS games that I can play when I want a good turn based game, I would really like a game in the current generation that is as fun. (I suppose though one of the things I like about the old games is their colorful, simple graphics, so perhaps I should just stick to them.)

Making the characters likable/relevant would be good too. I haven't played FFXIII, but I disliked FFXII's characters.
Vaan was "you", but completely insignificant to the story (more of a framing).
Pennello was similar, only there to be the maiden in distress and be hit on.
Basch was a good character, and it's a shame it wasn't from his perspective.
Balthier and Fran really just seemed to be doing their own thing.
ASHE was just a whiny *****. Yeah, her father and husband died, her kingdom overthrown, and all, but she was just so self-centered and constantly making bad decisions. Yes, in real life one should feel sorry for her (though past troubles are not an excuse for cruelty, however I won't try to argue about that), but Ashe was entirely unlikable. They should have chosen a main character with a back story that didn't require her to be so irritating.

On an off topic question: Why do Square Enix games have such a drastic difference in quality between games? Some seem as though they had no budget (Final Fantasy) and others seem like they are made by a publisher who has no budget and little clue what they are doing.

I give it the proper burial it's been needed for decades and finally just move on to other things threatening my minions and underlings with hot pokers and the comfy chair if they even SUGGEST we make another friggin' FF game..

As the new president of Square Enix and Goodtimes Funfactory, I see to it that the next game we make with nothing in common whatsoever with any previous FF game besides a few names, possibly a character and the fact that it's ...kind of an RPG... will not be called "Final Fantasy MCMLXVIII" But something a bit more apropo, like "Mog's Adventures in Amsterdam", "Sephiroth's Closet Capers" or "Vincent Valentine: Hot Topic Manager".

For a new Final Fantasy I'd experiment with a new "narrative control" mechanic. What would that mean?

"narrative control" is a game design idea from tabletop gaming. You can learn more about it at sites like The Forge, http://www.indie-rpgs.com/forge/index.php "narrative control" recognizes that playing a game with others creates a social contract, and creates rules for PCs to share the reins with the GM. For obvious reasons the actual mechanics created for narrative control in table-top games would not work with a computer game.

What I have in mind you could call "Story Points". The player would be offered multiple opportunities to earn SP while playing the main storyline. Then the player could spend PP to customize their play experience, either in cosmetic ways by personalizing the party members or in more advanced ways by opening up side-quests, mini-games, or alternative battle systems. For players spending a lot of SP, their Final Fantasy game would become a wild sandbox of challenges, but the game would be a simpler, straightforward narrative for more novice players.
Ya know..that actually doesn't sound like a bad idea. It'd take a lot of work to implement right, but being able to delve into sidequests that I'd actually care about, or being able to learn more about only the characters I like and not all of them would be great.
Of course you'd unlock more things to unlock with these 'SP' as you went along, but Id love to see this idea put into play

For imagination: A new Final Fantasy set in a more FF9 like universe, but more gritty. I'd like to see something like that.

For money: Porn sim with all the FF girls and Tidus. Totally tasteless? Yes. Going to bring in $$$? Double yes.
