Mass Effect universe. I would love to be an asari biotic.
probably this, though i dont think i would be an asari (i am a completely straight man, it would be kind of hard to adjust to not having a johnny and having breasts, not to mention my skin would be BLUE (but that could be kind of cool), and i would probably be hit on by guys alot, which would be akward)

but if i could choose what i was as well, i would like to be a space marine (like in warhammer 40k), preferably a devestator.

or i would be a Kaldorei Druid (what? warcraft is awesome, and i think Kaldorei is one of the coolest names for a race ever, much better than night elves. ironically, they are the same species). power over nature and i can become any of a dozen or so animals? that would be awesome! not to mention, it would be kind of a nice change of pace from the constant war of basically everywhere else (because they were called Kaldorei up to the War of the ancients as far as i know, so shooting for that time period)

I'd slot as many of the Myst games into it as I could so I could play and be free in that universe for five years, wasting away to a shell of a human lost in a fantasy world.

I know my apprehensions might never be allayed, and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written.

Either that or any of the really good RPGs - Mass Effect, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, or even Tolkien's universe might be fun... for a time.

...you can only run one program in it. What program do you run? The program can run for a maximum of five years before resetting and you remain in control the entire time. How would you spend your time on it?

Because I'm a massive history geek, I would like to experience WWI in the holodeck. Five years on the Western Front would be educational as well as entertaining and unlike the poor souls who were there for real; I would be able to pull out at any moment.

[sub]Second choice would be making Freelancer a reality and third would be Pokemon. But I could really jump into some trenches.[/sub]

Well, what do you program the holodeck for?

[sub][sub]I can guarantee you I already know some of the responses.[/sub][/sub]

[sub][sub][sub]If you don't know what a holodeck is, I am disappointed in you.[/sub][/sub][/sub]
five continuous years on the western front would drive you insane. assuming you left the safety locks on so it didn't kill you gruesomely in a matter of days.

also, just for clarification: one program PERIOD, or only have one installed at a time?

One program period. And I mentioned I would be able to pull out of the program at anytime. I'm not about to take the safety locks off.

I still think there's a good chance you'd come out nuts.

But to answer the question: I'm not really sure. I'd try to rig up some kind of universe sandbox where I can do lots of different stuff that I can't in real life: fly fast jets, ride a moon rocket, cruise around the Local Group in an NX-era starship...
hmm, starship. yes, that.

I don't think i'd use it for sex tho. i'd get bored too fast. First dates on the other hand, absolutely.

Program a holodeck in the holodeck bypassing the one program rule? No

I would probably make some detailed learning program to teach me.

You know, these people are right, holodecks would make for the best D&D campaigns ever...

Are we allowed to have a holodeck program of multiple holodecks?
Reminds me of Inception. Just how deep can you go? "You were in a simulation...of a simulation!"

I'd probably want my program to be something like Rez, where music is visualized and the world is very abstract.

I would serve under Captain Picard on the USS Enterprise and boldy go where no man has gone before and hopefully grow a more impressive beard than Riker and make Deanna Troi notice me and go drinking with Worf and build stuff with Jeordi and have intellectual discussions with Data and outrank Wesley Crusher!

A living D&D campaign for my friends and I.
id do one better and have basically 5 years of the forgotten realms universe running just think of all the possible scenarios you could run prespell plague obviously
I'm not a fan of the FR setting. It's hard to get into the whole "you have to save the world" thing when you're well aware that there are no less than three dozen people with practically god-like power who could save the world just fine if they'd just get off their butts. That and the power creep is too high. I like D&D best under level 10-ish.

You know what, that would be a lot of fun. I'd push Wesley out of an airlock and make it look like an accident.

Im going to take a guess as the most common number that will be used in this thread will be either 34 or 63...

Anyways, for me...IDK... maybe a LA noir like program...
