I'd say that overall, Lego itself has become more kiddy over time. Its somewhat of a cliche, like "back in my day, we only had 2x4 bricks and we liked it", but too much of modern Lego is made up of big molded lumps.
Not that it excuses people being jerks about it. I'm sure most everyone at some point built a house that had multicoloured brick walls. Its just that now they have the skills (and possibly more importantly, funds) to make things so 'perfectly'.
I'm saving my old Lego. In the unlikely event I have children, I can show them how awesome it was back in the day. Though forcing myself to allow children to play with my Lego may be a struggle... I remember the horrible, torturous things we did to bricks back then...
