I didn't think it was possible to grow up not knowing who Queen is, even now they still get massive amounts of airplay, especially in England. I have had an experience of similar surprise when I found out that a 26 year old coworker of mine had never heard an Eric Clapton song or knew who he was. To put this in context I work with a group of people who ages range from 19-60 and everyone else could at least one of his songs.

The I'm not from that era of music is a fair enough excuse, I mean it's not unlikely that someone would not have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the back catalogue of a musician who mostly active 20 years before they where born. Though that is limited to artist who don't have songs that still get massive airplay on the radio.

Anyone can walk up to me and say, "Hey you know (insert band here)" and 98% of the time my answer will be "Who?"

And thats just because i'm not really a music sort of guy.
This is my answer . I don't listen to music ever , i know a couple of bands/ artists but i couldn't tell you any of their song titles . People assume that because i'm black that i know all the hiphop song and can dance really well . I don't listen to hiphip nor rap , nor do i listen rock or pop . The only artist ( and i really mean only ) i listen to is eminem. But i like video game/ orchestra music but never bough a cd . Oh and i'd love to go see a opera . TAKE THAT STEREOTYPES!

Had a similar one at Download festival 2010, which happened shortly after the death of Ronnie James Dio. I shouldn't have to tell you how a big deal he was.

There was a lot of stuff done in tribute to him. The organisers named a stage after him, Killswitch Engage paid their respects to him before doing their usual cover of Holy Diver, and he basically got the loudest cheer when they did the photo montage of rock musicians that had died over the past year.

After seeing all this, one guy in the group of people we were hanging out with, who I should emphasise is there because he liked heavy metal enough to pay £200 plus travel expenses, said (paraphrasing) "Who was that guy they were paying tribute to? Dio, or something?"

A facepalm moment if ever I had one.

I suppose that's not too out of the ordinary. Queen is from another generation and you don't hear them as often now as you used to on the radio or otherwise.

Music transcends age. People of any age can enjoy any musical style if they view it with an open (and in some cases necessarily uncritical) mind.
That exactly! In fact you will likely have a much better listening experience if you listen to old music. Old music that has survived 30 years for example only does so cause its good music. New music will often disappear in a year because its not very good.

As for my wont believe your hears moment, I asked one of the guys at work to name a few extremely influential musicians of the past 100 years. The only name he could come up with was snoop dog. Seriously?!? He also denied that Michael Jackson had a major influence on pop music.

Muse did that Twilight song, right? And Queen is the band that created Bohemian Rhapsody. I'd say the cake is taken by OP.

Anyway, I listen to the Beatles quite a bit and I can perfectly understand why someone might not like them, but what I don't understand is someone not hearing about them. I list a few songs and they've heard Yellow Submarine or All You Need is Love, but really... The Beatles?
How is that even possible? That's kind of like never hearing about the UK as a whole... Maybe some very small islands have people that haven't heard of The Beatles. But North Americans and Europeans should all know them. There's never been anyone more famous.

Theres so many bands in existence that you're bound to find a band that someone has never heard of before. Especially if you keep up with what isn't getting much radioplay because then you can just take one of those bands and mention them to a friend. Then you'll have them being all like I've never heard of that band before and you can be all like well I have so haha you is stupider than me for not knowing this band.

I once showed a friend's sister Still Alive
Her: When was this released?
Me: 2007, why?
Her: I thought so, this sounds real old
First, four years does not make a song old and why does this matter?!?
I almost killed her after that
To today's generation, even if a song is 6 months old, it IS old. Hell, I remember some people listening to that Eminem album that came out last year with that "I'm not afraid" song, saying it was "Old school rap".

PS: I am 16, and I have heard of Queen and I listen to Queen a lot.

THE CLERK IS A POD PERSON! GET OUT OF THE STORE IMMEDIATELY!

No really, it's an official pod person test. If they don't like Queen, they're infiltrators taking over.
What?...

Queen....Queen....that is the band with the gay bloke as the lead singer correct? (not that there is anything wrong with that). Never listen'd to them and never will probably.
Pod person.
