It's very true. I work at a bar, and some of the waitresses make more in tips then the manager does in her salary. Even in this drooping economy, people still waste money in bars and leave a big tip.

Tipping is a largely American phenomenon. It doesn't happen often in Australia, because our minimum wage is at a good level so there's no real need to tip waitresses and the likes.

Hooray for decent minimum wage! Mind you, if you're under 18 the wages are terrible, but that's because we don't really need it most of the time.
