Sounds about right. To this day I refuse to go to the Religion and Politics forum due to the fact that if I try to express my opinion in a topic there, for the next 4 days my inbox will be filled with people quoting me who are more than happy to tell me exactly how incredibly wrong I am.

Best thing to do is to pick your battles before you even bother typing. Ask yourself this: "Do I really care about what this random jackass on the internet has to say? Is it worth the effort knowing full well that nothing I can say - regardless of what proof I offer - is going to change this person's mind?" More often then not the answer to those questions is - or should be - no. It's best to realize this before you write an essay. :p

Actually that happens on just about every topic here on Off-Topic. Not necessarily a long winded diatribe, but a reply of some form, humorous or serious. Then I'd say 90% of the time I re-read it and decide a thread on dating a transgender really isn't a shit-storm I need to wade through.

Honestly I'm of the opinion that if you need more then a paragraph or two to say what you want to say wright a blog. Frankly I don't care enough to read your stupid long winded opinion. And yeah some things aren't worth fighting for.

It's happened to me a few times. Some times there's no point arguing something online. Time can be better spent with spouses, friends, pets, or even playing video games.

well I guess there is arguing and then their is discussing things.
I am quite intrigued now about what you wanted to say.

Well, it was going to be in the Religion and Politics section. It was basically a bit of a venting about how I can't actually go with either major group (liberal or conservative) because they'd both hate me, and how the atmosphere of the United States (and seemingly the world) is basically so that I have to keep my mouth shut at all times about anything important because I'm literally one issue away from pissing someone on EITHER side off.

To conservatives, I'd be a liberal heretic; to liberals I'd be a heartless conservative.

However, I figured making myself persona non grata at the Escapist and possibly inciting a gigantic ideology war, even on R&P probably wasn't a good idea just I could vent. So I let it go.

I should have done this a while ago. If I did, I wouldn't have gotten banned from Reddit.

Eh, worse when it's on the first page of someone else's thread. Doesn't matter how long the thread goes, how many times you clarify yourself, people will still read the first page and make the same comments and assume nobody else has.

My life has become immeasurably better since I stopped. I also don't contribute in threads where my opinion has already been stated. Once I drop an opinion, I now leave.

I enjoy the internet a lot more when I stopped caring about it.

But the worst pain isn't when you do that; it's when you write your massive post, and then you hit "Post" and the internet screws up and you hit back and hope it's there. It isn't there. TIme wasted, point not posted, sure as hell not doing it twice.

It is mostly a forum-by-forum thing. There are some forums where I'm more than willing to discuss religion, politics, social issues, environmental issues, etc. and do it for years without ever getting tired. There are other forums where I've grown so tired I either rarely do it or refuse to do it anymore.

I sometimes go back and delete a post. Just because sometimes people are so dead set in views harmful to others that there is no point in arguing with them. Sometimes it's just because I get irritated by saying "I really have to say this?" to myself, that I just erase the post and say forget it.

I can't say I've done that after 2 hours (wow) but I have done it on posts that maybe went on for a paragraph or three. I've also at least twice now written up a long-winded post intended to start a discussion thread on something I've been thinking about, only for my computer to fuck up in some way and have it all erased. It really leaves me feeling a bit deflated, that's for sure.

EDIT: I should say this mostly happens on facebook. I get irritated by some of my friends posting psuedo-scientific or philosophical ramblings that go nowhere, so often when I find myself posting something even close to that I sit back and think "I'm about to subject these guys to the same thing I hate them doing. Fuck it." Then I erase it. That, or it's something I just KNOW my mom will post on, and though I love her dearly, having your mom post on something you wrote on facebook that isn't directly involving her is so lame.

Holy shit! I've actually done that this year, kinda... in a thread retaining to posting whichever song you just so happen to be listening to at the time... My glob, was that an eye-opener in the "There's no point in continuing something if one side's too lazy to continue on further, anyway" kind of way... I'm sure that user can vouch for me, if he still remembers that shit...

Other than that, I remember writing an OP-like post for a thread I was creating, then Chrome freezes on me and I lose everything that I typed up beforehand... Ended up not making a thread after all because I didn't know how to reword it back together again...

I've done that several times, but deleted it only because I realized that I sounded like an idiot.

Far too lazy to spend that much time on a post. I do sometimes spend a little longer than usual crafting a post though. Typically on topics I'm interested in or have an investment in, unsurprisingly. That said, I'm not one to spend a very long time making my point. I try to get it out in a few posts. Don't care if I have to use a bit of blunt language to do it. That seems to work well enough.

I've had a few points where I'm far too tired to try to piece together a restatement of my feelings on an issue. So I just go digging for what an old post of mine said, since past me can be surprisingly better at making my point sometimes than I would be now. And then there's times when I've accidentally back spaced entire posts thinking I had already copied the text. Sucks when you thought you had the ideal wording hashed out and can't recall it again.
