Just read up on brain washing, and take steps to build up the persons self identity, getting them to become well read couldn't hurt either (do not severe ties with them, as this is playing into the hands of the cult) and if their one of your closest friends, its through thick and thin.
Speaking from personal experience I had the misfortune to actually be born to a couple who were/still are active cult members, I myself grew up with nothing but the cult as my reality, It was fortunate that I was able to meet .... normal people for the most part in society through school and work, after becoming a big reader in my spare time,
I was suddenly chilled to my core when reading the usual "spiritual" literature that my family espoused that I was began noticing certain unnerving similarities with its format wording etc and that was briefly talked about in a book I was reading about the human psyche. Under the title BRAIN WASHING AND MIND CONTROL.
A few googles later and I was voluntarily well on my way to getting reformed after a life of mental abuse.

Repeated mockeries of his ocult behaviour and challenging the leader of his cult to demonstrate his powers or whatever the hell he's supposed to be able to do.
Mine joined a cult... it's called Christianity. 
Personally I just left him to it, he became a completely different person when it happened so we're not friends any more. He's all weird and happy now, and no longer understands sarcasm. I imagine I'd be the same if it were a proper cult.

Nope, other than appealing to logic in an illogical situation, I don't see the contradiction. At least if you can say something that they can't argue against, then you've done as much as you can do in this situation. I would do whatever I can. It'll be hard, cults, especially suicide cults, tend to brainwash their members to a specific way if thinking. Which would probably mean I would have to kidnap him and break the mindset he's been forced into. Depending on how serious it is, this could be as simple as reminding him who he really is to possibly mild torture methods to break ties.
