My default answer is Star Control 2, but after watching the GSTL finals I'm tempted to say StarCraft 2; can the best game ever be a game you'd rather watch than play? :x

Depends on the genre. A tie between Metro 2033, Zelda majora mask and warcraft 3

Nothing has ever held my attention for so long since, and that honestly upsets me.

The delight I extracted from slaughtering so many creatures is nigh-on disturbing but I couldn't give a fuck. Diablo II defined what I now hold as the standard for a good game, and I shall treasure it always.
God that picture is messed up. Why does Diablo look like a Warcraft Orc.......uhh you didn't make, it or anything right? [nervous laugh]

OT: Mass Effect just literally took my breathe away, for minutes on end, at certain sections. Like near the end where the Elevator to the presidium gets stuck so you blow open the side wall.....and walk out onto the presidium tower. That shot was just....well, breathtaking.

No other game has done that yet so, I guess Mass Effect so far.

Well if we ARE counting the orange box, without question that.

If were talking individual games? I'm extremely torn right now. I just beat Half life 2 and its episodes for the first time yesterday, and I can't decide whether I like them, or my long standing favorite Shadow of the colossus more.

The range of emotions SOTC makes you feel, and the incredible fights, make it simply breathtaking. But Half life 2...is just perfection. The story, the charecters, the gameplay, the soundtrack. EVERYTHING is perfection. Also, Alyx Vance is now the best Video Game Charecter ever. She has even beat out Tali fro ME2.

F*** it, Half life 2 it is.

I only have to pick one??? Well first one that came to mind was Metal Gear Solid. Than came Final Fantasy IX, Morrowind, Baldur's Gate II. I could also mentioned Plancescape Torment, Warcraft 3 and Call of Duty 2. Some of them introduced me to real gaming, some of them stunned me with sheer size of the world, some were the first game I played on PC, some had unparalleled story and some showed me the fun of online multiplayer. Good times.

EDIT: I forgot about Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror & Shadow of Templars, and Monkey Island 1-3.

Much as I love everything Valve has brought to the table (really, i haven't disliked one of their games yet)...

I gotta say my favorite game so far is Halo 2. Its never really hit such a high point since the second game, and while I wish I could say it was one thing or another, i gotta say that the whole game just came together at the perfect point in my life to be the best game of all time. Part was the online gameplay, part was the gravemind, and part was the fact that for the first time we saw the covenant from the inside. I'm not going to pretend it was flawless, tanks and banshees were as helpful to game balance as a power drill to the chest, and the ranking system was shit, but those are small complaints compared to "i need a weapon".
