You come back from work, tired after a long day. Your child should be back from school soon. But they never return. How do you react?

Other than that, if we're speaking hypotheticals, I'd panic and yell at the mister unreasonably.

Ignore this. Internet was being funny and now it has been properly punished, but not before it could make me post the same thing twice.

Well, seriously, I suppose I'd call him up, then the school, the missis and the police?

The child never arrives home, so the actions in the question begin as soon as you start to worry about the child.

I'd start to worry as soon as it gets dark. I'd probably start by calling people that may have seen them (school etc.) and then head out to have a look. Unfortunately my school actually *forbids* students from carrying phones (super rural Japan).

Then the usual. Phone cops. Phone local hospitals. Then just sit by the phone and panic.

By then I'd be so freaked out I wouldn't sleep.

Depending on the age of the kid, I doubt I'd let them walk home on their own anyway, but lets roll with that.
Call the school, go to the school, search the route, call the police.
Honestly, I'd rather have a kid who is embarressed because I made a big deal of them being late home than have the worst situation happen because I didn't make a big enough deal of it.

Related story- me and my mum were once going to get my brother (at the time he was six) from school and we were told he had already been picked up.
At this point we're a bit freaked because in his school supposedly only those who have signed the collection form can pick up the kid (so, me, mum, stepdad). We asked who had picked him up and we were just told `A man`. Stepdad was at work so it couldn't have been him.
I have never felt so much panic ever.
My mum jumped in the car and told me to head home and wait there for if he comes home and then she goes off searching the area.

Anyway, turns out a family friend of ours had picked my brother up because he was heading to our house anyway, but the school still got an earful for handing my brother off to someone who was not authorised to pick him up.

on a serious note i would wait till it was actuelly late, then look at my phone to see if someone tried to contact me, then i would try to call the kid after that some friends of him/her and if all els fail the mother who would go all in child rage and get this shit fixed

Well since most children have cell phones, I would give said hypothetical child a call.

If that fails I call the houses of his friends.

And if that fails I call the police.

It's kind of a vague statement; How old is the child? How far is his school from my house? Is he known for coming straight home after school with few exceptions or is he the type of person that plays outside with friends all day?

Those things all play into how I would react.

I would do nothing. Any child of mine that can't survive on the street by school age doesn't deserve to survive.

Alternatively I would do nothing because as far as I know I don't have any children, and as such couldn't know the child had failed to return to it's home.

Call their name and see if they come and if they don't I know they'll come back when they get hungry.

The minute I get home and observe that my child is not home I would call the wifey. I'd tell her something wonderful happened. I would take her out to dinner and enjoy my wealth.
