I've always wondered what operating system gamers would flock to if we weren't bound by DirectX.

If all game developers coded with OpenGL (a graphics libary that suports all modern operating system; Windows, Linux, Mac, OpenSuse)
If gamers would see a reason to try other operating systems.

Personaly I'd love to be able to play all my games on Ubuntu without having to use Wine or Cedega, because I love the sense of community with that Disto.

Now I'd like to hear from you, What is your choice of operating system if you could game on anything?

Ps: This is not a flame war.

It depends, mainly on how much the OS's cost. If I had to go by cost, I would say Linux, probably ubuntu, but for apps other than games, I would have to stay with windows because as long as software producers keep making for windows only, you're kind of stuck with it.

Edit: I realize that not ALL software producers make for windows ONLY, I was just generalizing.

I like OS X a lot more than I like Windows, so I would love it if more games would use OpenGL. Right now I have to make do with Boot Camp.

I'm happy with Windows OS's. Less messing around to get games and such to run than other OS's, and I really don't like OS X or Ubuntu's interfaces. Never used Linux.

XP, the most stable. With current-gen hardware, though.
But I'm actually happy with Vista (64-bit Home Premium), my rig is beefy as hell.

Linux definitely, I just like the way it uses system resources better than a windows machine, and that flaws in the system are quickly and easily fixed due to the open source communities. Closed source software is very slow to find flaws and patch.

I run linux on my desktop and windows xp in a vm like god intended.

Technically you have, but on another vein nobody has. Ubuntu is the interface/distro, Linux is the core of the operating system.

As it is I make do with WINE and FreeBSD, so I'd like to use that.

Gaming on OpenBSD would be pretty awesome too, but there is no way a development company is going to write code good enough to meet the systems requirements.

I do prefer Linux. If anything goes wrong, it takes about 5 minutes to find a fix or patch for it and its pretty simples as far as OS's go.

OS X, because its easy to use, and it has spaces and expose' and it is a 64 bit OS that supports 32 bit drivers.

Windows XP and eventually Windows 7. Windows 7 looks great so I'll definitely get it.

I'm happy with Windows XP most of the time. It combos well with Firefox for me. I don't really do much PC gaming, so that doesn't really affect me either way.

I second this motion. I might even install W7 on my laptop, if I have 2 GB RAM by the time the OS comes out.
