Linux, most definitely. Today's Real Computer Users really should have some sort of POSIX compliance, and that isn't something you get in any Windows version.

What's POSIX?

As for me, while I would have to go for OS X for looks and efficiency, my winner would be Windows XP. It runs well, fast and I've had years of experience with it; even if I'm not getting the most out of my RAM, XP is just so much more efficient than Vista.

However, Windows 7 is looking pretty. It may be something I will take a look at when it comes out.

If either Ubuntu would start supporting DirectX or more games would start using OpenGL, I would jump to Ubuntu in an instant. Ah, one can never stop dreaming...

definitely leopard, after going form my xp media center to my imac last year ive found pc's to be really fiddly to use.

I know next to nothing about the non-big kids on the block, but I was really happy with the old Windows 2000 Professional. It worked, it ran, it wasn't to hungry, and just went.

XP does a good/decent job, so I guess it would be the worthy successor.

Windows Vista is a Pebble in the Shoe of Civilization.

If I had the time, I'd like to mess with the Mac OS series, but.....

XP. Since it came out. Until death. I hate Linux. It's awkward.

I use OSX as well, and I like it. It's better than XP for Photoshop and such.

Just a nice cross between the highly compatible, low resource using Windows XP (Which by the looks of the recommended specs between that, Mac OSX and Ubuntu is best for it, surprisingly) and the sheer stability and security you get with many of the more user friendly Linux distros, although I've yet to see one which ommits the need of the console when installing things. I just can't get my head around console commands, if I could I'd have Ubuntu with Steam installed, but alas, I never got it working. Good job I've always got an XP disc lying around.

If we ignore costs, mac OS are pretty consistantly awsome, so I'd go with that. Really though I'd probably stay with windows, it's just easier to get drivers etc working. I only really see the advantage of linux when I'm being a cheapass and don't want to fork out for an O/S.

Me: "Linux, install the program"
Linux: "You can't tell me what to do! Who do you think you are?!"
Me: "sudo bash"
Linux: "Ok... Sorry... What do I do?"
Me: "Install the program"
Linux: "What Program?!"
Me: "That one."
Linux: "WHERE?!"
Me: "THERE!" [shows exact location]
Linux: "Ok then... what is it?"
Me: "It's a program... Install it!"
Linux: "Install it where?"
Me: [gives up]
